Recognizing this reality, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), in collaboration with local educational partners, recently implemented a transformative digital literacy program for Alternative Learning System (ALS) learners in Zamboanga Sibugay. This blog post delves into the multifaceted aspects of this initiative, highlighting its significance, methodology, and broader implications for inclusive education and community empowerment.

Held at Surabay Central Elementary School in Roseller T. Lim town, the training reached 15 ALS learners, carefully selected to benefit from personalized and practical instruction. Under the program title โ€œEmpowering Lifelong Learners,โ€ facilitators from DICT designed a curriculum that placed emphasis on fundamental computer skills and the practical use of Microsoft Office tools, among other digital competencies.

The hands-on sessions are an essential feature of this program. Learners were introduced to computer systems through interactive exercises that allowed them to build confidence and mastery over digital tasks. From creating basic documents, spreadsheets, and presentations to understanding internet navigation, the sessions provided tangible skills that learners can apply immediately in both educational and personal contexts.

Michelle Jane Salboro, the district ALS coordinator, outlined the significance of this initiative in breaking educational barriers. She remarked that the program โ€œuplifts our students by giving them the opportunity to gain skills that will help them adapt and grow in todayโ€™s digital society.โ€ Indeed, by focusing on mastery rather than mere exposure, the training creates a solid foundation for learners to continue their educational journeys and engage with digital platforms effectively.
