Embracing the Future: The DigiPay Initiative in Catarman, Camiguin

COURTESY: RTP/PIA-10/Camiguin

In an era characterized by rapid digital transformation, local governments are increasingly recognizing the importance of integrating digital solutions into their economic frameworks. On March 21, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the local government of Catarman, introduced the DigiPay Initiative—a pilot digital payment system aimed at modernizing transactions and enhancing financial inclusivity in Northern Mindanao. This initiative is not just a technological upgrade; it represents a significant paradigm shift in how businesses and consumers engage, fostering a more efficient and accessible commerce landscape.

The Contextual Significance of Digital Payment Adoption

The backdrop of the DigiPay Initiative stems from the growing recognition that the global business environment is rapidly evolving towards digitalization. As Mayor Kiterio Antonio Palarca aptly noted, “We are in the digitalization era, and I hope our local businesses will adopt this for easier transactions.” This statement underscores the urgency for local enterprises to adapt to technological advancements that streamline operations and enhance customer experiences. In Catarman, where tourism thrives, such adaptations are not merely beneficial but essential for sustained economic growth.

The introduction of the DigiPay Initiative signifies a proactive approach in fostering an ecosystem where micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) can flourish. It acknowledges the high influx of domestic and foreign tourists engaging with local businesses, particularly over weekends, thus creating both an opportunity and a responsibility for local entrepreneurs to meet the evolving expectations of their clientele. By empowering these businesses with digital payment tools, the initiative facilitates smoother transactions, reduces dependency on cash, and enhances the overall efficiency of commerce.

Mechanisms and Features of the DigiPay Initiative

At the heart of the DigiPay Initiative lies a robust digital payment system that integrates various technological solutions to streamline financial interactions. The initiative was officially launched at the Dininggasan Tourism Complex, a strategic location that plays a crucial role in Catarman's tourism landscape. Through this program, local entrepreneurs can utilize electronic payments via QR codes and fund transfers, which are not only convenient but also secure. This reduction in cash reliance aligns with global trends toward contactless and cashless payment systems, making financial transactions more seamless and efficient.

Moreover, additional features of the DigiPay Initiative enhance its effectiveness. The provision of free public Wi-Fi at the Dininggasan Tourism Complex is a forward-thinking measure that directly supports digital transactions. Access to reliable internet services is often a significant barrier for small businesses in rural areas, and this initiative addresses that gap. Furthermore, the establishment of an e-commerce kiosk by DTI Camiguin aids vendors in managing cash-in and cash-out transactions, ensuring that even those with limited digital literacy can engage in the digital economy.

Fostering Digital Literacy for a Sustainable Future

While the launch of the DigiPay Initiative is a commendable step, the accompanying digital literacy training reflects a comprehensive strategy to ensure that local businesses can fully harness the advantages of digital payment systems. The training encompasses critical aspects such as e-commerce, digital payments, cyber hygiene, and online security, empowering local entrepreneurs with the knowledge they need to navigate the digital landscape confidently.

Indeed, educating stakeholders on these topics is essential for fostering a culture of innovation and trust within the local business community. As DICT Camiguin Provincial Officer James Sagocsoc emphasized, “As we move forward with DigiPay and our broader digitalization efforts, let me reiterate our commitment: We are on a journey of progress, and walay bisan usa nga mahabilin in this Digital Era” (no one will be left behind in this Digital Era). This commitment to inclusivity is crucial in nurturing a digital ecosystem where all businesses can thrive, regardless of their size or technological proficiency.

Moreover, understanding the nuances of digital transactions equips local entrepreneurs to mitigate the risks associated with cyber threats and online fraud. This knowledge not only protects their businesses but also builds consumer confidence, encouraging more individuals to engage with digital payment methods.

Catarman's Vision: A Model for Financial Inclusivity and Business Digitalization

The implications of the DigiPay Initiative extend far beyond immediate transactional efficiency. By positioning Catarman as a model for business digitalization and financial inclusivity, local leaders aim to inspire other regions to adopt similar strategies. This initiative serves as a beacon of progress, illustrating how technology can bridge gaps in access and fortify local economies.

As Catarman embraces its new digital identity, it sets a precedent for how municipalities can leverage technological advancements to enhance their economic landscapes. For local businesses, this initiative represents a pivotal opportunity to diversify their operations, attract a broader customer base, and ultimately enhance their competitive edge. By transforming traditional business practices and adapting to the digital age, Catarman has the potential to an increasingly interconnected world. With the right support and continued innovation, the success of the DigiPay Initiative could very well serve as a template for other regions to follow, marking a significant leap forward in the regional digital economy.

Green is the New Gold: Empowering MSMEs and Ensuring Food Security in Mindanao

COURTESY: Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 10

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that food security and sustainable practices are the way forward. At the forefront of this movement is the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region 10, with their dynamic OIC-Assistant Regional Director Almer Masillones leading the charge. Just recently, during the Mindanao Agri-Coop Expo 2024 held at Mallberry Suites Business Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City, Masillones unveiled a series of innovative programs that aim to transform both our food systems and the role of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Let’s dive into what this means for the future of food, trade, and sustainability in the region!

The DTI Region 10 isn’t just talking the talk; they’re walking the walk with the Green Economic Development Program. This initiative is all about encouraging MSMEs to adopt green practices, reducing the environmental footprint while boosting productivity. From eco-friendly packaging to energy-efficient processes, these practices not only benefit the planet but also help businesses save on costs in the long run.

At the Mindanao Agri-Coop Expo, ARD Masillones emphasized the crucial role of MSMEs in driving sustainable economic growth. By aligning with the expo’s theme, “Strengthening Cooperative Resilience: Advancing Climate Smart Agriculture and Sustainable Farming Management,” the DTI is setting a blueprint for what a sustainable future could look like. The message is clear: MSMEs are not just part of the economy; they are pivotal players in ensuring a resilient and sustainable future.

One of the standout programs introduced was the Three-Year Food Logistics Action Agenda. Imagine a world where our food distribution system is so efficient that it seamlessly travels from farm to fork with minimal costs and maximum freshness. This agenda seeks to revolutionize the entire supply chain, addressing gaps, investing in infrastructure, and leveraging ICT for improved logistics performance.

But it doesn’t stop there. The DTI Region 10 has a smorgasbord of initiatives aimed at empowering MSMEs and ensuring food security. Programs like Kapatid Mentor ME, Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program, and Shared Service Facilities are tailored to enhance the capabilities of local businesses. These initiatives are not just about growth; they are about smart, sustainable growth that benefits everyone, from farmers to consumers.

Coconuts are more than just a tropical delight; they are a significant part of the local economy. The Coconut Farmers and Industry Development Plan is one of the many initiatives aimed at revitalizing this vital sector. By providing support and resources, the DTI is ensuring that coconut farmers can thrive in a competitive market, paving the way for sustainable practices that benefit the environment and the economy.

In addition to coconuts, the One Town, One Product initiative is helping towns across the region showcase their unique products. This not only boosts local economies but also empowers communities to take pride in their heritage and traditions. The Rural Agro-enterprise Partnership for Inclusive Development and Growth is another exciting program, promoting collaboration and innovation in rural areas, ensuring that no one is left behind in the march towards progress.

In today’s world, e-commerce is king. Recognizing this, the DTI has launched several initiatives to help MSMEs tap into the digital economy. By embracing online platforms, local businesses can reach a global audience, expanding their market and boosting their sales. This digital transformation is crucial in building a resilient economy, capable of withstanding the challenges of the modern world.

Export initiatives, including Halal certification, are also part of the DTI’s comprehensive strategy. By meeting international standards, local products can compete on the global stage, opening doors to new markets and opportunities. This not only benefits businesses but also strengthens the economy as a whole, creating jobs and fostering innovation.

In conclusion, the Department of Trade and Industry Region 10, under the leadership of OIC-ARD Almer Masillones, is making significant strides in ensuring food security and empowering MSMEs through green practices. With a plethora of initiatives and a clear vision for the future, the region is set to become a beacon of sustainable development. Whether it’s through enhancing logistics, promoting digital expansion, or supporting local industries, the DTI is laying the groundwork for a brighter, greener future. So, here’s to a future where sustainability and growth go hand in hand, and where green truly is the new gold!

Raising the Bar: How the DTI Empowers Oro Chamber Members through Standards Compliance

CREDIT: PIA CDO

In the dynamic landscape of entrepreneurship, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Misamis Oriental takes the front row in catalyzing growth and fostering a culture of excellence. During the Oro Chamber 1st Quarter General Assembly, the DTI unfolded essential insights on standardization and conformity assessment, underscoring the significance of adhering to standards for business prosperity.

Standards may seem like mere documents approved by recognized bodies, yet their role in driving business growth is pivotal. They are not just guidelines but essential tools for ensuring product quality, safety, and competitiveness in the market.

Standards transition into mandatory regulations when they impact crucial aspects such as life, health, safety, the environment, or local manufacturers. The voluntary nature of standards doesn't diminish their importance; instead, they level the playing field in the business realm.

A total of 111 products fall under the mandatory certification scheme and are grouped into nine consumer product categories. These range from household appliances to automotive-related products, reflecting the comprehensive nature of the scheme.

The Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS) is the National Standards Body in the Philippines, established under Republic Act 4109. Its role is to develop, implement, and promulgate standards for all products in the Philippines, thereby ensuring the manufacturing, production, and distribution of quality products.

Two prominent product certification schemes are the Philippine Standard (PS) Quality and Safety Certification Mark and the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) Certification Scheme. These marks serve as indicators of compliance with standards, enhancing product credibility.

To ensure strict adherence to standards, the DTI Misamis Oriental conducts regular monitoring, market surveillance, enforcement actions, and on-site audits. These measures help maintain a fair and competitive business environment.

Non-compliance has its consequences, as demonstrated by the recent destruction of uncertified products worth over P760,000. These products were seized during surveillance and enforcement operations for lacking mandatory PS mark or ICC sticker.

Compliance isn't merely about avoiding penalties; it's about enhancing the credibility and marketability of products. Entrepreneurs are urged to prioritize obtaining product certifications to increase their products' appeal to consumers.

The Fair Trade Law and standards requirements emphasize the importance of fair business practices. By complying, businesses not only adhere to regulations but also contribute to a healthier and more robust business ecosystem.

In the grand scheme of business growth, standards compliance is a cornerstone. The DTI, through its initiatives, continues to empower Oro Chamber members, promoting the development of businesses while ensuring the protection of consumers. Ensuring adherence to standards is not just a responsibility, but also a pathway to success.

The Oro Chamber’s proactive engagement with the embassies of Malaysia and Indonesia, alongside the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), underscores a robust tripartite commitment to nurturing Halal as a formidable sector ripe for entrepreneurial ventures. The deliberate pivot towards the Halal industry signifies a transcendental vision for Northern Mindanao’s trade sphere. This endeavor, aiming to position the region as a linchpin in Halal commerce, extends a hand toward tapping into international markets. This strategic direction harmonizes with DTI’s concerted efforts to elevate the Philippine Halal Industry, fostering partnerships and assimilating global best practices, particularly with Halal-centric nations such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei Darussalam.

The ORO BEST Expo 2024 stands as a monumental platform where entrepreneurs, innovators, and investors converge to explore the myriad avenues within the Halal sector. The focus on Halal at the ORO BEST Expo illuminates the path to inclusive economic growth, recognizing the importance of accommodating diverse cultural and religious practices in business. This inclusivity, pivotal for the peace and development in Mindanao, reinforces the region’s capacity to foster a business environment that values diversity and social harmony.

Understanding the critical role of Halal certification in building trust and credibility, the Oro Chamber, in tandem with DTI, is laying the groundwork for streamlined certification processes. These measures aim to simplify the Halal certification journey for local enterprises, ensuring their competitiveness in both domestic and international Halal markets.

With an eye on the future, this year's expo will also delve into the role of technology and innovation in accelerating Halal industry growth. The exploration of tech-driven solutions for Halal certification, product tracking, and market access is expected to be a highlight, showcasing the intersection of tradition and modernity in Halal commerce.

The ambition extends beyond the expo, with aspirations to evolve Northern Mindanao into a Halal Economic Zone. This strategic vision envisages a dedicated hub for Halal production, research, and trade, encapsulating the region’s aspiration to be at the vanguard of global Halal industry development.

The ORO BEST Expo 2024 is set to serve as a critical juncture in the global Halal ecosystem. By fostering connections between local businesses and international Halal markets, the expo is not just an event but a beacon for future-oriented trade relations that span across continents, culture, and communities.

As the ORO BEST Expo hones its focus on the Halal industry, it orchestrates a symphony of commerce, culture, and cooperation. Standing as a testament to the enduring spirit of innovation and inclusiveness in Cagayan de Oro and Mindanao at large, the event beckons a future where Halal is not merely a niche but a normative dimension of global trade dynamics. Through this vibrant exposition, the city reinforces its role as a catalyst for economic transformation and a bridge-builder in the burgeoning Halal global marketplace.
