Amidst the vibrant culture and resilient spirit of its people, a significant voice rises above the crowd, emphasizing the crucial role of Filipinas in shaping the country's future and protecting its children. As we journey through this blog post, we will delve into the inspiring work of Daphne Culanag, of the Project Against Child Exploitation (ACE) of World Vision Philippines, and her relentless drive to combat child abuse and teenage pregnancy.
Filipino women, with their unwavering resilience and nurturing spirit, have always been the backbone of their families and communities. They wear an armor of fortitude, their indomitable will pushing them to pursue the best for their children, regardless of the challenges that may arise. Culanag, during the Talakayan sa PIA, spoke of this tenacity, highlighting the importance of never giving up, even when faced with the most daunting odds.
In alignment with National Women’s Month, Culanag's words underscored the pivotal role of women as the protectors and nurturers of the next generation. She emphasized how their strength and determination are invaluable assets in the fight against child exploitation. This celebration of women's empowerment was echoed in Project ACE's initiative with the City Government of Cagayan de Oro and Councilor Girlie Balaba, which involved orienting the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children (BCPC) across 40 barangays.
The initiative, held between Feb. 26–29, was a collaborative effort involving several entities, including the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD), City Council for the Protection of Children (CCPC), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), and Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG). Together, these entities emphasized the crucial role of women in safeguarding children's rights and wellbeing, illustrating the importance of collective action in addressing societal issues.
Having personally encountered child laborers and victims of sexual abuse, Culanag carries a poignant understanding of the realities of child exploitation. She discussed her journey, attributing her deep sense of responsibility towards child protection to her parents, especially her mother, who championed family life and the protection of the unborn. Her experiences further solidified her commitment towards eradicating all forms of child abuse and exploitation.
Despite her extensive work and experience, Culanag acknowledges that the fight against child exploitation is far from over. Shockingly, mothers are often found facilitating online sexual abuse and exploitation, revealing a grim reality that underscores the urgency of her advocacy. "Until there’s a child that is being abused, I think we have to continue with this advocacy of promoting child protection," she asserts, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
Culanag's vision is a society where every child is protected, educated, and loved. To make this vision a reality, she recognizes the role of families, communities, and the government in creating a supportive environment that encourages responsible decision-making and fosters confidence in children. She implores Filipinos to realize that children are not objects of abuse or exploitation. Instead, they are to be protected and cherished.
Culanag underscores the government's role in prioritizing education, women's empowerment, and positive parenting initiatives to create a conducive environment for children's growth and development. She extends her appreciation towards their partners who have helped promote advocacy for children’s protection throughout the years.
In her message to young girls, Culanag encourages them to grow up to be women of the Lord and emphasizes the importance of standing up for their rights. Her words serve as a potent reminder that it's okay to say no when something feels wrong or uncomfortable.
