The dynamic landscape of Cagayan de Oro City is poised for transformative change as the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber) unveils its comprehensive strategic strategy for 2025. Centered around the INVEST directives, this strategy aims to position Cagayan de Oro as a hub of sustainable growth and prosperity. By fostering innovation, collaboration, and economic development, the Oro Chamber is set to redefine the business environment in the region.

Innovation and Business Landscape Transformation

The cornerstone of the Oro Chamber's 2025 strategy is innovation. Under the INVEST directives, the "I" stands for Invest for innovation and improving the business landscape. Engr. Almarco C. Brito, Oro Chamberโ€™s President for 2025, asserts that prioritizing initiatives fostering innovation will create a more conducive business environment. By leveraging technology and fresh ideas, the chamber aims to enhance productivity and competitiveness. This commitment to innovation is not just about adopting new technologies; it's about creating an ecosystem where businesses can thrive through continuous improvement and adaptation.

Transitioning to a more innovative business landscape requires collaboration between various stakeholders. The Oro Chamber recognizes the importance of building Networks with industry leaders and partners, as denoted by "N" in the INVEST directives. By fostering relationships with key players in the industry, the Oro Chamber is creating a robust support system for businesses in Cagayan de Oro. These networks are vital for sharing knowledge, resources, and best practices, ensuring that local businesses remain competitive on a national and global scale.

Valuing Member Services and Economic Competitiveness

Valuing member services and engagement is at the heart of the Oro Chamber's mission, represented by "V" in the INVEST framework. The chamber is dedicated to understanding the needs of its members and providing tailored services that enhance their business operations. By actively engaging with its members, the Oro Chamber ensures that their voices are heard, and their concerns are addressed. This member-centric approach fosters a sense of community and loyalty, strengthening the chamber's influence and reach.

Economic competitiveness is another critical component of the chamber's strategy, highlighted by "E" for Enhancing economic competitiveness through capacity development. The Oro Chamber is committed to equipping local businesses with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in today's rapidly evolving marketplace. Through capacity development programs, the chamber provides training, workshops, and seminars that focus on critical business areas such as leadership, technology, and strategic planning. By investing in human capital, the Oro Chamber is laying the foundation for a more resilient and competitive business community.

Strengthening Infrastructure and Sustainable Investments

Strengthening manufacturing and infrastructure development is a pivotal aspect of the Oro Chamber's 2025 strategy, represented by "S" in the INVEST directives. The chamber aims to attract sustainable investments of at least P35 billion into the manufacturing and infrastructure sectors. These investments are not only crucial for bolstering the economy but also for creating jobs and opportunities for the local community. By focusing on sustainable development, the Oro Chamber is ensuring that growth is both inclusive and environmentally responsible.

Collaboration with government, industry, and academia is essential for transforming the local economy, as denoted by "T" in the INVEST framework. The Oro Chamber emphasizes co-creation, where these stakeholders work together to develop innovative solutions for economic challenges. This collaborative approach ensures that the region's development is holistic and aligned with national and international goals. By fostering partnerships and encouraging dialogue, the Oro Chamber is paving the way for a more integrated and sustainable economic future.

Legislative Advocacy and Strategic Partnerships

In 2024, the Oro Chamber played a pivotal role in influencing key legislative initiatives in Cagayan de Oro City. Through active participation in consultations, focus group discussions (FGDs), and meetings, the chamber achieved significant policy changes such as tax incentives for small businesses and streamlined processes for permits and licenses. The passage of critical legislative measures, including the Comprehensive Land Use Plan and Zoning Ordinance, demonstrates the chamber's effectiveness in advocating for the business community.

Strategic partnerships have been central to the Oro Chamber's success. Collaborations with organizations such as the Regional Halal Committee and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-10 have led to the establishment of the Northern Mindanao Halal Supply Chain. The potential launch of the OROBEST Halal Hub further strengthens the region's position in the growing halal industry. Additionally, partnerships with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-10 and the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-X have been instrumental in fostering innovation and aligning local economic strategies with national goals.

Looking ahead, the INVEST directives will continue to guide the Oro Chamber's efforts in 2025. By focusing on innovation, attracting investment, and supporting its members through legislative advocacy, strategic partnerships, and capacity development initiatives, the chamber is set to usher in a new era of prosperity for Cagayan de Oro City. As the chamber continues to champion the interests of the business community, it remains steadfast in its commitment to creating a thriving and sustainable economic landscape for the region.

Raising the Bar: How the DTI Empowers Oro Chamber Members through Standards Compliance

CREDIT: PIA CDO

In the dynamic landscape of entrepreneurship, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Misamis Oriental takes the front row in catalyzing growth and fostering a culture of excellence. During the Oro Chamber 1st Quarter General Assembly, the DTI unfolded essential insights on standardization and conformity assessment, underscoring the significance of adhering to standards for business prosperity.

Standards may seem like mere documents approved by recognized bodies, yet their role in driving business growth is pivotal. They are not just guidelines but essential tools for ensuring product quality, safety, and competitiveness in the market.

Standards transition into mandatory regulations when they impact crucial aspects such as life, health, safety, the environment, or local manufacturers. The voluntary nature of standards doesn't diminish their importance; instead, they level the playing field in the business realm.

A total of 111 products fall under the mandatory certification scheme and are grouped into nine consumer product categories. These range from household appliances to automotive-related products, reflecting the comprehensive nature of the scheme.

The Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS) is the National Standards Body in the Philippines, established under Republic Act 4109. Its role is to develop, implement, and promulgate standards for all products in the Philippines, thereby ensuring the manufacturing, production, and distribution of quality products.

Two prominent product certification schemes are the Philippine Standard (PS) Quality and Safety Certification Mark and the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) Certification Scheme. These marks serve as indicators of compliance with standards, enhancing product credibility.

To ensure strict adherence to standards, the DTI Misamis Oriental conducts regular monitoring, market surveillance, enforcement actions, and on-site audits. These measures help maintain a fair and competitive business environment.

Non-compliance has its consequences, as demonstrated by the recent destruction of uncertified products worth over P760,000. These products were seized during surveillance and enforcement operations for lacking mandatory PS mark or ICC sticker.

Compliance isn't merely about avoiding penalties; it's about enhancing the credibility and marketability of products. Entrepreneurs are urged to prioritize obtaining product certifications to increase their products' appeal to consumers.

The Fair Trade Law and standards requirements emphasize the importance of fair business practices. By complying, businesses not only adhere to regulations but also contribute to a healthier and more robust business ecosystem.

In the grand scheme of business growth, standards compliance is a cornerstone. The DTI, through its initiatives, continues to empower Oro Chamber members, promoting the development of businesses while ensuring the protection of consumers. Ensuring adherence to standards is not just a responsibility, but also a pathway to success.

Stepping into the Future: Oro Chamber's Masterplan to Boost Public-Private Synergy in Local Development

SOURCE: PIA 10

The Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation Inc., fondly known as Oro Chamber, is not just an organization, but a beacon of hope for the thriving business sector in Cagayan de Oro. This year, they have taken a bold step forward, unveiling their strategic directives aimed at solidifying their position as the business sectorโ€™s voice and enhancing government-private sector collaboration to drive the city towards prosperity.

In the heart of the VIP Hotel, on the 22nd of March, the president of Oro Chamber, Dr. Jesus Jardin, took centre stage at the organization's first quarter general assembly. Here, he introduced the L.E.A.D. framework - an abbreviation that stands for Legislative priorities, Engagement with partners and stakeholders, Advocacy and active participation, and Development of internal processes. This framework epitomizes the Chamber's commitment to drive economic growth not just in the city but also for the region.

Dr. Jardin emphasized the paramount significance of the first priority - engagement with government bodies and legislators at both national and local levels. He highlighted the Oro Chamber's proactive engagement in the legislative process as a crucial driving force in shaping policies and directions that directly impact businesses.

Among the legislative priorities that the Oro Chamber intends to pursue, Cagayan de Oro's zoning ordinance, local investment and incentive code, green building code, and start-up ordinance stand out. These, coupled with the city's Comprehensive Land Use Plan, Transportation Master Plan, and Tourism Code, form a powerful blueprint for future growth.

The second priority of the L.E.A.D. framework hinges on maintaining a positive rapport with regulatory agencies such as the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Bureau of Internal Revenue. The aim? To foster a conducive business environment that fuels growth and innovation.

Unveiling the third priority, Dr. Jardin brought the spotlight onto advocacy, particularly for a green, sustainable, and resilient business community. Advocacy initiatives such as the Northern Mindanao Regional Innovation Program and Exhibit, scheduled for April 22โ€“24, will be held in coordination with the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA)-10, the Department of Science and Technology, and the DTI-10.

Among the key advocacy activities planned by the Oro Chamber is the Northern Mindanao Transportation Summit. As Dr. Jardin states, "It is high time that we coordinate all our efforts to ensure that transportation is seamless in the city of Cagayan de Oro and adjoining municipalities."

The Oro Chamber's calendar is packed with impactful events. The Elevate Agriculture Convention and the Cagayan de Oro Startup Summit in July, the Housing and Construction Congress in August in partnership with the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development, the Mindanao Rubber Summit in September in cooperation with NEDA-10, and the Oro Best Expo Goes Halal in October in collaboration with DTI-10.

Finally, the last piece of the L.E.A.D. puzzle is the development of internal processes. Dr. Jardin shared plans about streamlining operations and enhancing the chamber's capacity to efficiently fulfill its obligations to members and the wider community. In alignment with this, the Chamber launched its new website and human resources program during the assembly.

In conclusion, the Oro Chamber president reaffirmed their commitment to drive economic progress and prosperity in the city. "Let us lead to make Cagayan de Oro a more prosperous city because, at the end of the day, our mandate is to make sure that we will be improving the quality of life of our people in the region," he added. This commitment, combined with the strategic L.E.A.D. framework, promises a bright future for Cagayan de Oro's business community and its people. The stage is set, and Oro Chamber is leading the charge towards a prosperous future.
