COURTESY:  CIO

A Vision for Economic Growth

Under the visionary leadership of Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy, Cagayan de Oro City Hall is poised to elevate its economic portfolio significantly. This strategic move aims to secure funding from the European Union (EU) for transformative projects that focus on the green economy. The city’s commitment to sustainable development has never been clearer, as it embarks on a journey to create a circular economy that benefits both its residents and the environment.

Recently, a two-day workshop commenced on February 18, 2023, at the City Planning and Development Office (CPDO) Conference Room. This workshop is not merely a gathering; it serves as a critical stepping stone in finalizing the city’s Circular Economy (CE) Portfolio for the EU-PH Green Economy Partnership. Participants engaged in refining project proposals, determining the city’s funding capabilities, and identifying potential donors and investors who can support these ambitious initiatives.

Crafting the Circular Economy Portfolio

The newly minted CE Portfolio will be known as Resource Innovation for Sustainable Economic Circularity (RISE) CDO. This portfolio encompasses a range of innovative projects aimed at fostering sustainability. Among the standout initiatives are the Technology for Sustainable Agricultural Decomposition and Application (TSADA) Organic, Plastics Lifecycle Action for Sustainability through Circularity (PLASTIC), and Knowledge-Driven Actions for Holistic, Inclusive, and Multi-Sectoral Urban Nature Nexus (KAHIMUNAN).

In addition to these groundbreaking projects, Cagayan de Oro City is prioritizing the procurement of shredders for large-scale organic composting and the establishment of plastic processing facilities. Moreover, the city aims to acquire processing equipment to handle unsold vegetables, fruits, and food waste from local restaurants and hotels. These initiatives not only aim to reduce waste but also strive to create a more sustainable and resilient economy for the community.

Through the collaborative efforts of the EU, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and various local government entities, Cagayan de Oro is on a promising path towards a greener future. As the city embraces innovative practices and sustainable solutions, it sets a powerful example for other regions, proving that economic growth and environmental responsibility can indeed go hand in hand.

On June 7, 2025, the vibrant city of Cagayan de Oro witnessed the launch of an exciting initiative—the Northern Mindanao Loop 2025 Riders event. Spearheaded by esteemed figures including Senator JV Ejercito and Philippine Motorcycle Tourism ambassador Ma. Rica ‘Jet Lee’ Cabarrubias, this three-day motorcycle journey promises not only thrills but also a celebration of the picturesque landscapes and rich culture of Northern Mindanao. The festivities began at the crack of dawn, with riders gathering at the iconic Rio de Oro Boulevard to commence what would be an unforgettable adventure.
Setting the Stage for Exploration

The event kicked off with a palpable sense of enthusiasm and camaraderie among the participants. As the sun began to rise, motorcycle enthusiasts from various regions converged at the Rio de Oro Boulevard, each rider eager to embark on this unique journey. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement, reflecting the collective passion for exploration that unites motorcycle riders across the Philippines. Moreover, the welcome dinner hosted by the Cagayan de Oro City Hall on the evening of June 6 served as a precursor to the day’s adventures, allowing riders and officials to foster connections and share their love for travel.
During the dinner, Councilor George Goking conveyed the city’s warm welcome on behalf of Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy. He emphasized the city’s unwavering support for events that promote tourism and local culture, particularly those that align with the Department of Tourism’s Philippine Motorcycle Tourism program. This initiative not only aims to bolster the local economy but also to showcase the stunning landscapes that Northern Mindanao offers, from lush mountains to serene waterfalls.
The Scenic Route: A Ride to Remember

The first leg of the journey took riders to one of Bukidnon’s hidden gems—the Sinulom Falls located in Talakag town. This picturesque destination, with its cascading waters and lush greenery, served as a perfect backdrop for the riders’ first stop. As they navigated through winding roads, participants reveled in the breathtaking views that Northern Mindanao has to offer. The thrill of riding alongside nature’s beauty created an invigorating experience, fostering a sense of freedom and adventure among the participants.

Transitioning from the excitement of the falls, riders continued their journey through various scenic routes that highlighted the region's diverse landscapes. Each stop along the way provided an opportunity for participants to immerse themselves in the local culture, sample regional delicacies, and engage with the warm-hearted locals. Such interactions not only enriched the riders’ experiences but also reinforced the essence of motorcycle tourism—connecting people through shared experiences and adventures.

Celebrating Community and Culture

The Northern Mindanao Loop 2025 Riders event is more than just a ride; it is a celebration of community and cultural heritage. As motorcycle riders traverse the stunning landscapes of Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental, they also engage with the rich history and traditions of the regions they visit. This initiative highlights how motorcycle tourism can serve as a bridge between different cultures, fostering understanding and appreciation among participants and local communities alike.

Furthermore, the event serves as a catalyst for promoting sustainable tourism practices. By encouraging riders to explore lesser-known destinations, the initiative aims to distribute the benefits of tourism more evenly across the region, alleviating the pressures often placed on more popular tourist spots. This approach not only ensures the preservation of local culture and environments but also contributes to the overall well-being of the communities involved.

The Northern Mindanao Loop 2025 Riders Launch at Rio de Oro Boulevard marks a significant milestone in the promotion of motorcycle tourism in the Philippines. With the support of local government and tourism advocates, this event inspires riders to explore the beauty and culture of Northern Mindanao. As the engines rev and the riders embark on their journey, they carry with them the spirit of adventure, community, and the promise of unforgettable experiences that await in the stunning landscapes of the region.

In an era where education plays a crucial role in societal advancement, the city of Cagayan de Oro stands out as a shining example of excellence. Recently recognized by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), Cagayan de Oro has earned the remarkable title of the second highly urbanized city in the Philippines with the highest basic literacy rate. Under the leadership of City Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy, the city achieved an impressive basic literacy rate of 96.1 percent, as reported by the 2024 Functional Literacy, Education, and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS).

Basic literacy encompasses essential skills such as reading, writing simple messages, and performing basic mathematical operations. This high literacy rate not only reflects the city’s commitment to education but also highlights the effectiveness of local governance in promoting learning. Moreover, Cagayan de Oro's educational initiatives have laid a strong foundation for its residents, enabling them to engage more effectively in their communities and contribute positively to society.

A Step Beyond: Functional Literacy Achievements

In addition to its outstanding basic literacy rate, Cagayan de Oro has also secured a commendable ranking as the ninth highly urbanized city in the country for functional literacy, boasting an impressive rate of 84.4 percent. Functional literacy extends beyond basic skills; it involves the capacity to synthesize information and draw conclusions based on that data. This higher level of comprehension is essential in today's information-driven world, where critical thinking and analytical skills are paramount.

The achievements in both basic and functional literacy signify a commitment not only to educational access but also to the quality of education provided in Cagayan de Oro. This dual focus ensures that residents are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of modern life, enhancing their employability and overall quality of life. As the city continues to prioritize education, it sets a precedent for other urban centers across the Philippines to follow, fostering a culture of learning and empowerment throughout the nation.
