On July 4, 2024, a significant event marked the culmination of years of hard work and dedication. Top officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), alongside local leaders from Misamis Occidental and Lanao del Norte, gathered to celebrate the final concrete pouring ceremony between the two extra-dosed main bridges of the Panguil Bay Bridge Project (PBBP).

This landmark event was graced by prominent figures such as DPWH Secretary Manuel M. Bonoan, Senior Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain, Undersecretaries Eugenio R. Pipo Jr. and Carlos G. Mutuc, Assistant Secretary Rey Peter Gille, Misamis Occidental Governor Henry S. Oaminal Sr., and Lanao del Norte Governor Imelda Quibranza Dimaporo. The presence of these esteemed individuals, along with other public works officials and local leaders, underscored the importance of this milestone.

The topping-off ceremony signified the completion of the bridgeโ€™s pre-stressed concrete box girder between pylon 1 in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental, and pylon 2 in Tubod, Lanao del Norte. This is not just a structural achievement but a step closer to a vision of a fully connected Panguil Bay, promising numerous possibilities for the nation.

Secretary Bonoan highlighted the importance of this milestone, stating that it brings the vision of a fully connected Panguil Bay Bridge closer to reality. This project is not just about connecting two points; itโ€™s about bridging communities, fostering economic growth, and enhancing the lives of countless individuals.

In his opening remarks, Senior Undersecretary Sadain praised the final construction stage as a testament to the dedication and hard work of everyone involved. This project heralds a new era of connectivity and economic growth for Mindanao and the entire Philippines.

The Panguil Bay Bridge, soon to be the longest bridge in Mindanao at a staggering 3.169 kilometers, includes a 320-meter extra-dosed main bridge, a 1,920-meter pre-stressed concrete girder approach bridge, and a 929-meter approach road. This mammoth structure is expected to catalyze economic activities, improve quality of life, and open new opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment. Itโ€™s a significant benefit for local communities and a major contribution to national development.

The journey to this milestone was anything but smooth. The project commenced civil works at the height of the pandemic, facing significant challenges in weather conditions, material supply, and health restrictions. But the DPWH, relentless in their pursuit, pushed the design and build contractor, Namkwang Engineering & Construction Corporation, in joint venture with Kukdong Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd. and Gumgwang Construction Co., Ltd., along with the project consultant, Yooshin Engineering Corporation, in joint venture with Pyunghwa Engineering Consultants Ltd. and Kyong-Ho Engineering & Architects Co., Ltd., to exert their utmost effort to accelerate the construction activities of this infrastructure flagship project.

Despite these hurdles, the projectโ€™s overall weighted accomplishment stands at an impressive 93.3 percent, with a targeted completion within the third quarter of 2024. This achievement is a testament to the indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment of everyone involved.

The Panguil Bay Bridge project is not just a national triumph; itโ€™s a beacon of international cooperation and shared progress. Funded by a loan agreement between the Government of the Philippines and the Republic of Korea through the Korea Export-Import Bank Economic Development Cooperation Fund (KEDCF) under Loan Agreement No. PHL-18, this project stands as a symbol of what can be achieved when nations work together towards a common goal.

The involvement of Korea Export Import Bank (KEXIM) Deputy Country Director Yun Hak Lee and other international stakeholders highlights the global significance of this project. Itโ€™s a shining example of how international cooperation can lead to monumental achievements, benefiting not just the involved parties but also the broader community.

As we look towards the future, the completion of the Panguil Bay Bridge promises a brighter, more connected tomorrow for Mindanao and the entire Philippines. This bridge is not just a physical structure; itโ€™s a symbol of hope, progress, and the limitless possibilities that lie ahead.

The Panguil Bay Bridge is expected to catalyze economic activities, improve quality of life, and open new opportunities for trade, tourism, and investment. It will significantly benefit local communities and contribute to national development. This bridge stands as a testament to what can be achieved when vision, dedication, and international cooperation come together.

In conclusion, the Panguil Bay Bridge Project is more than just concrete and steel; itโ€™s a dream realized, a vision brought to life, and a promise of a better tomorrow. As we celebrate this milestone, we look forward to the countless opportunities and possibilities that this bridge will bring. Hereโ€™s to a brighter, more connected future!
