Powering Progress: A Promising Partnership for Misamis Oriental

COURTESY: misamisorientalgovph

A Milestone Meeting

On March 23, 2026, a remarkable event unfolded in Misamis Oriental as Governor Juliette Uy welcomed key personnel from SPI Power Inc., previously known as Steag State Power Inc. This visit was spearheaded by Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Plant Manager Dr. Carsten Evers. Their primary purpose? To present a significant remittance of ₱10 million to the Provincial Government, representing contributions accrued from 2019 to 2025. This initiative aligns with the Energy Regulation 1-94 program, which mandates power-generating facilities to provide financial benefits to their host communities. Specifically, this program requires a contribution of P0.01 per kilowatt-hour from electricity sales, ultimately benefiting the local populace.

The funds, overseen by the Department of Energy, will be allocated to essential projects aimed at electrification, livelihood enhancement, reforestation, watershed management, and health/environmental initiatives. With these resources, the Provincial Government can implement various programs that directly address the needs of the community. The collaboration between SPI Power Inc. and the local government signifies a strong commitment to fostering sustainable development, setting a precedent for future partnerships.

Building a Brighter Future

During the meeting, Dr. Evers emphasized the importance of collaboration and shared vision. He expressed his excitement about the numerous projects they plan to undertake in conjunction with the Provincial Government, highlighting their commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). "We have comprehensive programs based on several pillars, and we will continue to develop working together, especially with Governor Juliette Uy, whom I’ve known for 20 years," he noted. This longstanding relationship between Dr. Evers and Governor Uy fosters a constructive collaboration that promises to yield tangible results for the community.

The SPI Power Incorporated facility, which operates a 232 MW coal-fired power plant located in Villanueva, has been recognized as a significant contributor to the DOE ER 1-94 program. This partnership is a testament to Governor Uy’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the relationship between the government and the private sector. By engaging with companies like SPI Power Inc., she is paving the way for initiatives that will ultimately benefit the people of Misamis Oriental. This collaboration not only supports local development but also underscores the importance of sustainable practices in the energy sector. Together, they are indeed turning a new chapter in community empowerment and progress.
