Hey there, friends! Let’s chat about something truly inspiring that just went down in Cagayan de Oro. On March 30, the city government, led by the incredible City Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy, threw a graduation bash for 64 amazing women at the Cagayan de Oro City Jail Female Dormitory. Yup, you heard that right! These female persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) didn’t let their circumstances define them. Instead, they rolled up their sleeves and completed their junior high school and Alternative Learning System (ALS) non-formal education program. Talk about breaking barriers!

Now, let’s dive into what happened at this heartwarming ceremony. A total of 44 graduates from the ALS program and 20 junior high school completers from Lumbia National High School strutted their stuff in caps and gowns, radiating pride and joy. Under the guidance of the Department of Education-Cagayan de Oro City Division, led by City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Angelo E. Gazo, this basic literacy program is all about giving these women the tools they need to enhance their lives. And the best part? With functional literacy and skills in their arsenal, they can now take strides toward becoming productive members of society!

A Day to Remember: Guests Who Made It Special

But wait, there’s more! The celebration wouldn’t be complete without some special guests. The event welcomed Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Regional Director JCSupt Felixberto S. Jagorin Sr., as well as City Councilor Moreno Y. Daba, who chairs the Committee on Education. Their presence added an extra touch of significance to the day. Plus, Dr. Jestoni P. Babia, president of City College of Cagayan de Oro, delivered an empowering speech that left everyone inspired.

This graduation isn’t just a formality; it’s a testament to the hard work and determination of these women. With the support of the Cagayan de Oro City Jail, headed by City Jail Warden JSInsp Mary Rose Pacana, these ladies are ready to conquer the world outside those walls. So, let’s raise a toast to their achievements and the bright futures that await them! Here’s to resilience, empowerment, and the power of education!

From Behind Bars to Beyond: How Cagayan de Oro City Jail is Transforming Lives

In the heart of Cagayan de Oro City, a revolution in mental health and rehabilitation is quietly taking place. The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) at the Cagayan de Oro City Jail is not just about confinement; it’s about transformation and hope. With a focus on mental health advocacy, vocational training, and personal growth, this facility is setting a new standard for the welfare of persons deprived of liberty (PDLs). Let’s dive into the inspiring initiatives that are reshaping lives and futures.

Breaking the Chains of Neglect: Mental Health Advocacy

In today’s fast-paced world, mental health is often overlooked, especially in correctional facilities. However, the Cagayan de Oro City Jail is making mental wellness a priority. Ninety percent of their efforts are dedicated to providing individualized counseling for PDLs. This personalized approach ensures that each inmate receives the attention and care they need to heal and grow.

Partnering with local colleges, the jail has brought in nursing students to help advocate for mental health within the facility. This collaboration not only benefits the inmates but also provides invaluable experience for the students. According to JSInsp. Mary Rose Pacana, jail warden of the CDOJ-FM, these initiatives are essential for prioritizing the well-being of the inmates, many of whom have suffered from neglect in the past.

The Role of Psychometricians and College Partnerships

Despite the dedicated efforts of the jail's staff, there is a shortage of medical workers, particularly in the field of mental health. To bridge this gap, the facility has psychometricians on staff and has partnered with colleges in Cagayan to recruit more medical professionals. This partnership is crucial as it allows the jail to advertise the BJMP's needs and attract the necessary workforce.

JINSP Brit D. Aguilon, chief of Community Relations Services at CDOJ-FM, emphasizes the importance of making mental health support accessible and effective for everyone involved. Through continuous counseling and support, the facility helps inmates cope with various life challenges, preparing them for a healthier future.

Crafting a Better Tomorrow: Livelihood and Productivity

Mental health is just one piece of the puzzle. The Cagayan de Oro City Jail also focuses on enhancing productivity and providing livelihood programs for the inmates. Under the guidance of JSInsp. Mary Rose Pacana, the facility operates a bakery famous for its moist chocolate cake. This venture not only boosts the morale of the inmates but also equips them with valuable skills they can use after their release.

Expanding Horizons with Creative Activities

But the efforts don’t stop there. Pacana has ambitious plans to expand the dormitory space and introduce creative activities like diamond painting to encourage personal growth among the inmates. These activities are designed to stimulate creativity and provide a therapeutic outlet for stress and anxiety.

Every decision made at the facility takes into account the needs and desires of the inmates. Pacana explains, “We make sure that we understand their wants as well so that our plans align and help us grow together.” This inclusive approach ensures that the programs are effective and meaningful for everyone involved.

Building Skills for a Brighter Future

The Cagayan de Oro City Jail is committed to providing inmates with the skills they need to succeed in the outside world. By partnering with the First Community Cooperative, the facility offers vocational courses in plumbing, barbering, wood carving, and painting. These courses are designed to be marketable, giving inmates the tools they need for a better future.

Equipping Inmates with Marketable Skills

The jail facility goes above and beyond by providing the necessary equipment to ensure these skills are not just theoretical but practical. This hands-on approach allows inmates to gain confidence in their abilities and prepare for a productive return to society.

Aguilon highlights the BJMP’s dedication to rehabilitation and empowerment by addressing the needs of PDLs. By equipping them with skills and knowledge, the facility is paving the way for a successful reintegration into the community.

A Community of Support and Empowerment

The initiatives at Cagayan de Oro City Jail are more than just programs; they are a testament to the power of community and support. By focusing on mental health, productivity, and skill-building, the facility is creating an environment where inmates can thrive.

The Impact of a Supportive Community

The collaborative efforts between the jail, local colleges, and community organizations demonstrate the impact of a supportive network. This community-centric approach ensures that inmates are not just surviving but thriving, with the tools and support they need to succeed.

As the facility continues to innovate and expand its programs, it serves as a model for other correctional institutions. By prioritizing the welfare and development of inmates, the Cagayan de Oro City Jail is making a lasting impact on the lives of PDLs and setting a new standard for rehabilitation.

In conclusion, the transformative efforts at Cagayan de Oro City Jail highlight the importance of mental health advocacy, vocational training, and community support in the rehabilitation process. By empowering inmates with the skills and resources they need, the facility is not only improving their lives but also contributing to a safer and more prosperous society.
