Empowering Communities: The City Council's Bold Steps for Progress

COURTESY: CIO

In a decisive move towards community enhancement, the 21st City Council convened for its last regular session on January 26, 2026. During this pivotal meeting, several significant decisions unfolded, focusing on the annual budgets of various barangays, the accreditation of transport groups, and the allocation of P33 million for essential farm-to-market road projects in Barangays Bugo and Cugman. Such financial support not only signifies a commitment to local governance but also reflects the council’s dedication to uplifting the lives of its constituents.

The approved resolutions and ordinances reveal the council's strategic priorities. For instance, the financial plans for Barangays Baikingon and Puntod have been established, with projected incomes of over P37 million combined. Moreover, the Sangguniang Kabataan resolutions further demonstrate the council's investment in the youth, allocating funds for developmental projects in Barangays Pigsag-an, Dansolihon, Nazareth, and Macabalan. Such allocations signal a bright future, fostering local development and empowering the younger generation.

Enhancing Infrastructure and Cultural Life

In addition to budget approvals, the city council also addressed cultural and infrastructural advancements. Proposed Ordinance No. 2026-185 plays a vital role in promoting the arts by granting an exemption from amusement tax to The Xavier Stage of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan for their theatrical play, “Agatha Christie’s 10 Little Indians.” Scheduled for performance from February 23-28, 2026, this initiative not only encourages artistic expression but also enriches the local cultural landscape.

Furthermore, the council prioritized healthcare and infrastructure improvements through various ordinances. Proposed Ordinance No. 2026-186 authorizes the City Mayor to enter into a Memorandum of Agreement with the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines for the clinical training of Doctor of Medicine students at JR Borja General Hospital. This partnership promises to enhance the quality of medical education and healthcare services in the region. Similarly, the council’s authorization of a Deed of Donation for essential medical equipment exemplifies a proactive approach to improving community health resources.

The recent actions taken by the 21st City Council of Cagayan de Oro reflect a comprehensive strategy aimed at fostering development, enhancing cultural life, and improving public services. As these initiatives unfold, the community stands on the brink of transformation, poised to reap the benefits of thoughtful governance and dedicated leadership.

In an exciting development for aspiring healthcare professionals, the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) is set to unveil its College of Nursing at the Cagayan de Oro campus in August 2026. This initiative stems from a recent meeting of the USTP Board of Trustees, held on January 14, where the future of nursing education was passionately discussed. With CHED Chairperson Shirley Agrupis at the helm and Congressman Rufus Rodriguez advocating for progress, the board eagerly welcomed the pioneering faculty members who will shape the future of nursing education, led by the capable Dean Jan Michael R. Remolado, MAN, RN, LPT.

The nursing curriculum, a crucial component of this new venture, has already been meticulously crafted and reviewed to meet the stringent standards set forth by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). As USTP moves forward, it is diligently working to secure the Certificate of Program Compliance, a necessary step that will solidify its commitment to delivering a high-quality nursing education. This significant milestone not only represents USTP's dedication to academic excellence but also reflects the institution's responsiveness to the growing demand for healthcare professionals in the region.

Bridging the Gap in Healthcare Needs

The establishment of the College of Nursing signifies a proactive approach to addressing the critical shortages of healthcare workers in Cagayan de Oro and its surrounding areas. As the population continues to grow, so does the need for qualified nurses who can provide compassionate and skilled care. USTP’s initiative to expand its health-related programs comes at a pivotal moment, ensuring that future generations are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the evolving challenges of the healthcare sector.

Furthermore, the new college will not only bolster the local workforce but also enhance the overall quality of healthcare services in the region. By investing in nursing education, USTP is taking a significant step toward fostering a healthier community. Students enrolling in the College of Nursing will benefit from innovative teaching methods, hands-on training, and an enriching academic environment, paving the way for a fulfilling career in healthcare.

The opening of the College of Nursing at USTP marks a transformative moment in the landscape of healthcare education in Cagayan de Oro. COURTESY: University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP)

Hey there, fellow education enthusiasts! Buckle up, because I'm about to take you on an exciting journey about how the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP) is making headlines. Guess what? USTP achieves a landmark entry in the QS World University Rankings Asia 2025! That's right; they’ve burst onto the scene, grabbing the 169th spot in Southeast Asia and landing within the 901+ bracket in the overall Asia ranking. Talk about a grand entrance!

Now, you might be wondering, how did USTP pull off such a feat? Well, it’s a combination of determination, innovation, and a sprinkle of good old-fashioned hard work. This year’s edition of the rankings covers 25 locations across Asia with a whopping 984 institutions featured, including 25 from the Philippines. Among these, 142 universities made their debut, and USTP is proudly waving its flag among them.

Let’s dive a bit deeper into the nitty-gritty of USTP’s journey. Imagine this: Peking University in Beijing, China holds the top position in Asia, while the National University of Singapore (NUS) is leading the pack in Southeast Asia. Amidst these giants, USTP’s entry is not just a feather in the cap for the university but a beacon of hope for aspiring institutions.
According to the QS World University Rankings website, the 2025 rankings are the largest ever. They feature over 1,500 universities across 105 higher education systems. That’s a lot of competition! The United States tops the chart with 197 ranked institutions. The United Kingdom follows with 90, and mainland China with 71. It’s like the Olympics of education, and USTP has just made its debut!

Now, let’s talk about the juicy details – the criteria that got USTP this far. The university’s position in the rankings was determined based on four key areas: Research and Discovery (45%), Employability and Outcomes (20%), Learning Experience (15%), and Global Engagement (20%). These aren’t just fancy words; they’re the building blocks of USTP’s success.

Research and Discovery make up a hefty 45% of the criteria, highlighting USTP’s commitment to innovation and knowledge. Employability and Outcomes are crucial too, accounting for 20%, ensuring that USTP graduates are ready to tackle the real world. The Learning Experience, at 15%, shows that USTP is all about providing students with a top-notch education. Finally, Global Engagement at 20% illustrates USTP’s efforts in reaching out and connecting with the world.

Back in 2022, USTP was already making waves by securing a 3-star rating in the QS Stars University Rating System. This opt-in rating system gives prospective students a detailed overview of a university’s strengths, from research and employability outcomes to social responsibility and inclusiveness. It’s like getting a sneak peek into the future of education!

This achievement set the stage for USTP’s landmark entry into the QS World University Rankings Asia 2025. It’s a testament to the university’s relentless pursuit of excellence and its mission to provide quality education to its students. With each milestone, USTP is not only raising its profile on the global stage but also inspiring other institutions to strive for greatness.

So, there you have it, folks! USTP’s journey to the QS World University Rankings Asia 2025 is a story of ambition, resilience, and triumph. It’s proof that with the right mix of strategy and passion, even the sky is not the limit.
