The maritime landscape of the Philippines has recently undergone a significant transformation with the launch of a direct Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) ferry service from Mindanao to Luzon. This momentous event took place on June 12, 2025, coinciding with the nation's Independence Day celebrations. The introduction of this new route marks a historic milestone for both regions, as it provides a much-needed direct connection that bypasses the traditional detours through Samar and Leyte. Consequently, this innovative service not only enhances the efficiency of transport but also promises to invigorate the logistics and transportation sector across the archipelago.

A New Era of Connectivity

The direct RoRo service is a testament to the government's commitment to improving infrastructure and connectivity throughout the Philippines. Port Manager Froilan Caturla of the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and Lipata Terminal Manager Allan Yap were present to witness the arrival of the MV 1018, a modern Landing Craft Transport (LCT) vessel. This ship, measuring 85 meters in length and boasting a gross registered tonnage of 2,024 metric tons, can accommodate 37 10-wheeler trucks and five 6-wheeler vehicles. The inaugural journey from Lipata Ferry Terminal in Surigao to the Port of Bulan is anticipated to take approximately 21 hours. Such a direct route significantly reduces the time and logistical challenges associated with transportation between these two vital regions.

Moreover, the MV 1018 is equipped with amenities that prioritize comfort and convenience for drivers and seafarers alike. The vessel features free air-conditioned sleeping quarters, complimentary meals, and morning coffee. These enhancements reflect a growing awareness of the need for improved conditions for those who work in the transportation sector, thereby fostering a more efficient and pleasant travel experience.

Freight charges for this service start at ₱18,000 for 6-wheeler Bongo trucks, ₱30,000 for Canter and Elf trucks, ₱44,000 for 20-footer trailers, and ₱115,000 for trailer trucks loaded with heavy equipment. Such pricing structures indicate a competitive and accessible transport option for various cargo needs, thereby encouraging business growth and enhancing trade opportunities.

While the current operations rely on only one vessel, the shipping company has plans to strengthen its service by introducing an additional ship in the coming weeks. This expansion underscores the commitment to enhancing logistics capabilities and meeting the growing demand for efficient transportation solutions.
