In the heart of Caraga region, a transformative initiative by the Department of Agriculture- Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) is reshaping the landscape of rubber production, offering a beacon of hope and prosperity for local farmers and cooperatives. This groundbreaking project has not only provided essential support and assistance but has also paved the way for a more robust and sustainable rubber industry in Butuan City. By focusing on strengthening the industry and expanding market opportunities, the DA-PRDP has set a new benchmark for agricultural development in the Philippines.

The KM7 Farmers Producer Cooperative (KFPC) in Barangay Tungao stands as a testament to the project's success. Organized by local rubber farmers, KFPC has emerged as one of the prime beneficiaries of the DA-PRDP's efforts in the Caraga region. Through the introduction of a new cloned variety of rubber tree, capable of producing an increased amount of rubber latex, the project has significantly enhanced the efficiency and productivity of rubber harvesting in the area. Coupled with the adoption of the right equipment, such as cups, tapping knives, and rain protective structures, the initiative has revolutionized the traditional practices of rubber farming in Butuan City.

At the helm of KFPC's transformation is Samuel Calawigan Jr., the cooperative's chairperson, who shares an inspiring story of growth and opportunity. "Through DA-PRDP's support, we have witnessed a remarkable increase in our production capabilities, now able to consolidate 30 tons of rubber cup lumps monthly," Calawigan remarks. This surge in production is a direct result of the comprehensive engagements and interventions facilitated by the DA-PRDP, including capacity building and training in good agricultural practices. More than just an economic boon, this project has also contributed to improving the peace and order situation within the community, showcasing the multifaceted benefits of sustainable agricultural development.

The journey of KFPC and its members, under the guidance of the DA-PRDP, is a compelling narrative of transformation and success. Director Arlan M. Mangelen of DA Caraga highlights the project's achievements, noting the completion of the Integrated Rubber Production and Marketing subproject in 2020, with a total project cost of P22,184,350.13. This initiative has not only transformed the economic status and way of life for its members but also set a precedent for cooperative development across the region. "DA Caraga will continue to support the project’s beneficiaries, aiming to further elevate their income, productivity, and competitiveness," Mangelen adds.

The DA-PRDP stands as a national endeavor aimed at revolutionizing the agriculture and fisheries sector in the Philippines. By adopting a modern, value-chain-oriented, and climate-resilient approach, the project seeks to enhance income, productivity, and competitiveness in targeted areas. Through strategic partnerships with local government units and the private sector, it provides crucial infrastructure, facilities, technology, and information, marking a significant leap towards achieving sustainable agricultural development.

As Butuan City's rubber industry continues to flourish under the DA-PRDP's initiative, the future looks promising for rubber farmers and cooperatives in the region. The project not only exemplifies the potential for agricultural innovation to transform lives and livelihoods but also serves as a blueprint for sustainable development efforts nationwide. With continued support and collaboration, the rubber industry in Caraga and beyond can anticipate a future of green prosperity, marked by increased productivity, sustainability, and economic growth.
