Breaking Barriers: A Celebration of Empowerment at Cagayan de Oro City Jail

COURTESY: CIO

Hey there, friends! Let’s chat about something truly inspiring that just went down in Cagayan de Oro. On March 30, the city government, led by the incredible City Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy, threw a graduation bash for 64 amazing women at the Cagayan de Oro City Jail Female Dormitory. Yup, you heard that right! These female persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) didn’t let their circumstances define them. Instead, they rolled up their sleeves and completed their junior high school and Alternative Learning System (ALS) non-formal education program. Talk about breaking barriers!

Now, let’s dive into what happened at this heartwarming ceremony. A total of 44 graduates from the ALS program and 20 junior high school completers from Lumbia National High School strutted their stuff in caps and gowns, radiating pride and joy. Under the guidance of the Department of Education-Cagayan de Oro City Division, led by City Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Angelo E. Gazo, this basic literacy program is all about giving these women the tools they need to enhance their lives. And the best part? With functional literacy and skills in their arsenal, they can now take strides toward becoming productive members of society!

A Day to Remember: Guests Who Made It Special

But wait, there’s more! The celebration wouldn’t be complete without some special guests. The event welcomed Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Regional Director JCSupt Felixberto S. Jagorin Sr., as well as City Councilor Moreno Y. Daba, who chairs the Committee on Education. Their presence added an extra touch of significance to the day. Plus, Dr. Jestoni P. Babia, president of City College of Cagayan de Oro, delivered an empowering speech that left everyone inspired.

This graduation isn’t just a formality; it’s a testament to the hard work and determination of these women. With the support of the Cagayan de Oro City Jail, headed by City Jail Warden JSInsp Mary Rose Pacana, these ladies are ready to conquer the world outside those walls. So, let’s raise a toast to their achievements and the bright futures that await them! Here’s to resilience, empowerment, and the power of education!
