Powering the Cold Chain: How METS is Igniting a Sustainable Future in Cagayan de Oro City

Redefining Sustainability in Philippine Cold Chain Logistics
Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines — In a groundbreaking move toward environmental responsibility, METS Cold Storage Services, Inc. (METS) has forged a strategic partnership with First Gen Corporation to power its state-of-the-art facility in Tablon entirely with renewable geothermal energy. This initiative positions METS as one of the first major logistics providers in the region to operate on a 100% clean energy source, marking a pivotal step toward decarbonizing the country’s cold chain sector.

By committing to geothermal power, METS is not merely reducing its carbon footprint—it is setting a precedent for sustainable food preservation nationwide. This transformation reinforces the company’s long-standing commitment to operational excellence and environmental stewardship, proving that innovation and responsibility can thrive together in one of the logistics industry’s most energy-intensive operations.

Securing Reliable Power for Growth and Resilience
Effective October 3, 2025, METS will source up to 2,050 kilowatts of clean power from the Mt. Apo Geothermal Power Plant, operated by Energy Development Corporation (EDC), a proud subsidiary of First Gen. This renewable energy supply will fully power METS’ Cagayan de Oro facility, which boasts an impressive 22,000 metric tons of cold storage capacity—crucial for Northern Mindanao’s food and medical supply chain. Notably, this partnership also ensures a stable power foundation for the site’s forthcoming expansion, aligning infrastructure growth with sustainable practices.

The strategic location of the facility in Tablon solidifies METS’ role as a vital logistics hub in the region. By integrating cutting-edge cold storage technology with geothermal energy, METS not only guarantees food safety and operational stability but also lowers long-term costs. This dual achievement reflects the company’s forward-looking approach, balancing economic objectives with environmental imperatives.

A Greener Cold Chain for the Nation
The cold chain industry’s heavy reliance on continuous power has often come at a cost to the environment. However, METS’ decisive shift to renewable energy—highlighted by the leadership of CFO Eileen Tio-Ty—demonstrates that sustainable logistics is both achievable and advantageous. In her words, this is “a tangible demonstration of our commitment to a low-carbon future,” underscoring the vital link between clean power and national food security.

Arlene Sy-Soriano, Assistant Vice President of First Gen, further emphasized that reliable and sustainable power is essential for safeguarding perishable goods. This collaboration with METS showcases how indigenous geothermal energy can advance not only environmental goals but also the resilience of critical infrastructure.

Leading the Way to a Low-Carbon Future
Since its inception in 2010, METS Cold Storage Services, Inc. has scaled its operations across Cavite, Bulacan, Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro, achieving over 100,000 pallet positions nationwide. This latest leap into geothermal-powered operations affirms its leadership in both innovation and sustainability.

By choosing renewable geothermal energy, METS is proving that the Philippine logistics sector can be at the forefront of climate-conscious growth. Its Cagayan de Oro milestone is more than a facility upgrade—it is a bold statement that the future of essential logistics lies in the harmony between operational reliability and environmental responsibility.
