More Than a Label
So, what comes to mind when you hear the word "halal"? Probably just food that's permissible under Islamic law, right? Well, according to the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF), that idea is way too small nowadays.
At the Halal Trade Expo 2026 in Iligan City, NCMF Secretary Sabuddin N. Abdurahim explained that halal has grown into a global industry. It's now a market, a quality standard, and honestly, a real shot at inclusive economic growth.
Why Northern Mindanao Matters
Here's the thing: Northern Mindanao is sitting on a goldmine. Between its agriculture, food industry, tourism, and strategic location, the region has everything it needs to become a halal powerhouse.
But resources alone won't cut it. Abdurahim stressed that the whole value chain needs work, from education and certification to financing and trade access.
Everyone Has a Role to Play
Local governments, businesses, and communities all need to step up together. Local governments must back local industries, while the private sector brings innovation and investment.
Meanwhile, communities protect what makes halal meaningful in the first place: integrity, quality, and trust.
Building Toward Bigger Markets
Ultimately, NCMF wants an industry that creates jobs and lets Filipino products compete globally. That vision also supports President Marcos Jr.'s push for food security and inclusive growth.
