Empowering Sagay: How Camiguin is Embracing a Cashless Digital Future

Bridging the Digital Divide in the Heart of Camiguin

On October 3, a transformative moment unfolded in Sagay town, Camiguin. Market vendors, tricycle drivers, and residents welcomed the dawn of a new era as the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)-Camiguin launched the **DigiPay Initiative** alongside the nationwide **Free Wi-Fi for All program** at the Sagay Public Market. This strategic move signifies more than just technological progress—it marks a shift toward inclusivity, efficiency, and modern commerce.

The program directly supports micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), market vendors, and consumers by championing digital payments and improving connectivity in public spaces. According to DICT Camiguin Provincial Officer Engr. James Kevin Sagocsoc, the DigiPay Initiative rests on four primary components: connectivity, e-commerce and digital payments, the establishment of an e-kiosk, and the creation of a hub for freelancers and researchers. These pillars are designed to make Sagay digitally ready, while simultaneously boosting economic gain and community convenience.

Strengthening Local Economies Through Digital Inclusion

Mayor Joseph Uayan has voiced strong support for the initiative, recognizing that digital adoption is critical to Sagay’s local economic growth. He highlighted the importance of accessibility, noting that the free Wi-Fi operates 24/7 and could become the backbone for modern transactions. By advocating for ordinances that encourage businesses to accept platforms like GCash and PayMaya, the municipality is paving the way toward a truly cashless society. Such measures will benefit not only vendors but also transportation services, ensuring swifter and safer exchanges in daily life.

Residents have already reported tangible improvements. Sandy Baylin from Bonbon shared that the convenience of free Wi-Fi allowed them to connect effortlessly anywhere in Camiguin. Another resident, Caitlyn Bonachita from Poblacion, emphasized that responsible use of technology is crucial for maximizing its benefits. Beyond connectivity, training sessions on digital literacy, e-commerce, and cyber hygiene were conducted to ensure community members know how to use these tools effectively. With partnerships between DICT Camiguin, the Department of Trade and Industry-Camiguin, and the Sagay local government, the **DigiPay Initiative** is poised to transform Sagay into a digitally empowered community—one ready to navigate the opportunities and challenges of a cashless future.

Powering the Cold Chain: How METS is Igniting a Sustainable Future in Cagayan de Oro City

Redefining Sustainability in Philippine Cold Chain Logistics
Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines — In a groundbreaking move toward environmental responsibility, METS Cold Storage Services, Inc. (METS) has forged a strategic partnership with First Gen Corporation to power its state-of-the-art facility in Tablon entirely with renewable geothermal energy. This initiative positions METS as one of the first major logistics providers in the region to operate on a 100% clean energy source, marking a pivotal step toward decarbonizing the country’s cold chain sector.

By committing to geothermal power, METS is not merely reducing its carbon footprint—it is setting a precedent for sustainable food preservation nationwide. This transformation reinforces the company’s long-standing commitment to operational excellence and environmental stewardship, proving that innovation and responsibility can thrive together in one of the logistics industry’s most energy-intensive operations.

Securing Reliable Power for Growth and Resilience
Effective October 3, 2025, METS will source up to 2,050 kilowatts of clean power from the Mt. Apo Geothermal Power Plant, operated by Energy Development Corporation (EDC), a proud subsidiary of First Gen. This renewable energy supply will fully power METS’ Cagayan de Oro facility, which boasts an impressive 22,000 metric tons of cold storage capacity—crucial for Northern Mindanao’s food and medical supply chain. Notably, this partnership also ensures a stable power foundation for the site’s forthcoming expansion, aligning infrastructure growth with sustainable practices.

The strategic location of the facility in Tablon solidifies METS’ role as a vital logistics hub in the region. By integrating cutting-edge cold storage technology with geothermal energy, METS not only guarantees food safety and operational stability but also lowers long-term costs. This dual achievement reflects the company’s forward-looking approach, balancing economic objectives with environmental imperatives.

A Greener Cold Chain for the Nation
The cold chain industry’s heavy reliance on continuous power has often come at a cost to the environment. However, METS’ decisive shift to renewable energy—highlighted by the leadership of CFO Eileen Tio-Ty—demonstrates that sustainable logistics is both achievable and advantageous. In her words, this is “a tangible demonstration of our commitment to a low-carbon future,” underscoring the vital link between clean power and national food security.

Arlene Sy-Soriano, Assistant Vice President of First Gen, further emphasized that reliable and sustainable power is essential for safeguarding perishable goods. This collaboration with METS showcases how indigenous geothermal energy can advance not only environmental goals but also the resilience of critical infrastructure.

Leading the Way to a Low-Carbon Future
Since its inception in 2010, METS Cold Storage Services, Inc. has scaled its operations across Cavite, Bulacan, Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro, achieving over 100,000 pallet positions nationwide. This latest leap into geothermal-powered operations affirms its leadership in both innovation and sustainability.

By choosing renewable geothermal energy, METS is proving that the Philippine logistics sector can be at the forefront of climate-conscious growth. Its Cagayan de Oro milestone is more than a facility upgrade—it is a bold statement that the future of essential logistics lies in the harmony between operational reliability and environmental responsibility.
