Sipping Second Chances
As guests gathered for the Department of Education’s Alternative Learning System graduation inside the BJMP Cagayan de Oro City Jail, they paused at a modest coffee stall. Mark, a person deprived of liberty, confidently whipped up cup after cup of “The Warden’s Brew.” He measured grounds, steamed milk, and added creative touches that turned simple drinks into something special.
Moreover, this five-square-meter spot called **Beans Behind Bars** operates as a lively livelihood project. PDLs run it under the Welfare and Development Unit, serving coffee, milk teas, fruit teas, and sodas while picking up real skills for life after release.
Fast Learners Behind the Counter
Mark didn’t always command the coffee machine. He learned the craft from fellow PDL John, a TESDA-certified trainer who patiently taught the basics. “We’re fast learners,” Mark shared with pride. They absorbed everything in just weeks and quickly moved beyond plain brews.
Additionally, the team innovated and expanded the menu to around 20 drinks, including taro milk tea, cookies and cream, red velvet, and signature blends like Iceolated Coffee. They pour passion into every order and turn the small stall into a hub of creativity and growth.
Skills That Break Barriers
The coffee shop shines as only one example of the jail’s thriving programs. TESDA partners with BJMP to offer training in tailoring, electrical installation, metal fabrication, and salon services. PDLs cut and sew uniforms, bake fresh bread and pastries, and build practical expertise they can use outside.
Furthermore, these initiatives ensure no one gets left behind. Directors emphasize that everyone deserves access to technical skills, even inside facility walls. The programs deliver confidence along with know-how.
Rehabilitation Brews a Brighter Tomorrow
BJMP leaders and TESDA champions view rehabilitation as active rebuilding, not just time served. Mark dreams of managing his aunt’s outside coffee shop one day. He urges fellow PDLs to grab every learning opportunity and enhance their skills while improving behavior.
Ultimately, each cup from **Beans Behind Bars** carries more than caffeine. It holds hope, discipline, and proof that second chances start with a simple, powerful skill. Visitors who stop by don’t just get free coffee — they fuel real futures.
