Clearing the Way: How a Little Creek Cleanup Is Keeping Bulua Dry

Nobody enjoys waking up to rising water. That's why the Oplan Kontra Baha (OKB) program, led by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., puts flood prevention at the front of its agenda. Recently, the DPWH Cagayan de Oro City 1st District Engineering Office carried out vegetation clearing at Sapang Creek in Barangay Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City.

First, the crew moved in and cut away the overgrown plants clogging the creek. As a result, they cleared 5 linear meters of the waterway. That may sound small, but every cleared meter helps water flow freely instead of piling up.

Think of a creek like a drain in your kitchen sink. When something blocks it, water has nowhere to go. Similarly, thick weeds and debris slow the current and push floodwater into nearby homes. Therefore, clearing the creek reduces the threat and danger of flooding in the community.

Of course, one cleanup won't solve everything. Still, it shows that local engineers are taking action rather than waiting for the next storm. Moreover, residents can help by keeping their waterways free of trash.

In short, small steps like this build bigger protection. Stay safe, Bulua!
