Hooked on Better Catch — Reimagining Punta’s Fish Landing with a Splash of Modernity

COURTESY: ICA Trading Corporation

Why This Matters

The seaside buzz at Punta deserves a cleaner, safer place to land the day’s catch. Right now, vendors and buyers often work around cramped spaces and makeshift stalls. So, imagining a modern hub feels urgent and exciting.
Moreover, improved infrastructure doesn’t just look nicer. It boosts food safety and sanitation, which means fresher seafood on plates and fewer health risks. Consequently, the whole community benefits as waste drops and efficiency rises.
The Concept (Big, Bright Ideas)

Proposed New Fish Landing Facility at Punta, Macabalan by the Cagayan de Oro Seafood Wholesalers Association (COSWA)
Designed to improve food safety, sanitation, operational efficiency, and organized seafood distribution, this proposed facility aims to provide a cleaner, safer, and more modern environment for handling fresh marine products while better serving vendors, buyers, and the community.
Disclaimer: This is a conceptual design and currently under feasibility study. Plans and features are subject to change.

In short, the concept focuses on organized stalls, cold storage, processing zones, and proper waste handling. As a result, vendors can sell with pride and buyers can shop with confidence.

How It Could Change Daily Life

Imagine faster transactions and less spoilage: fish move from boat to cooler to market in record time. Thus, profits rise for fishers and costs drop for consumers.

Also, this hub can create jobs for handling, cleaning, and logistics. Plus, through better layout and sanitation protocols, it could attract more buyers from neighboring areas, boosting the local economy.

Next Steps and a Friendly Reminder

Right now, the idea sits in feasibility study mode, so stakeholders need input and time to refine plans. Meanwhile, community feedback can shape features that actually work for daily users.

Finally, stay curious and get involved. When practical plans emerge, Punta’s waterfront might just become a model of how traditional fishing communities can modernize—without losing the soul of the catch.

Powering Progress & Governance: How February’s City Council Session Shapes CDO’s Future

COURTESY: CIO

In the heart of Cagayan de Oro City, decisions made in the quiet chambers of governance often spark ripples of progress in the communities they serve. During the Feb. 9 regular Monday afternoon session, the 21st City Council, presided by Vice Mayor Jocelyn "Bebot" Rodriguez, approved a series of **BUDGET ordinances and key legislation including the authorization to install additional power lines in Barangay San Simon** and other measures that aim to improve public services, transparency, and infrastructure.

From community-level budget approvals to ethical case resolutions and infrastructure commitments, the session reflected the dynamic interaction between fiscal responsibility and public welfare. Through careful deliberation, these measures are set to impact the daily lives of residents—from better facilities to stronger barangay budgets fueling local projects.

Investing in Communities Through Budget Approvals

One of the key highlights was the passage of several budget-related resolutions crucial to sustaining and expanding local initiatives. **Proposed Resolution No. 2026-240** declared as operative the Annual Budget of Barangay Puerto for CY 2026, with an estimated income of P23,393,972.00. This financial affirmation ensures that the barangay can continue its programs and maintain essential services without interruption.

Similarly, **Proposed Resolution Nos. 2026-241 to 2026-244** gave the green light to the Annual Budgets of the Sangguniang Kabataan in Barangays Kauswagan, Pagalungan, Bulua, and Cugman. These approvals—ranging from P509,980.00 in Kauswagan to P5,462,626.00 in Bulua—empower local youth councils to plan and implement projects that directly resonate with their communities, fostering leadership and civic engagement among the city’s younger generation.

Ethics, Infrastructure, and Forward-Thinking Legislation

Alongside fiscal measures, the session addressed governance transparency through the Committee on Ethics and Blue Ribbon. Two notable cases—**BR Case No. 2026-05** and **BR Case No. 2026-07**—were both dismissed due to procedural non-compliance and lack of complainant interest, respectively. These resolutions, though administrative, are vital for upholding due process and preventing misuse of legal and legislative resources.

Moreover, the legislative body took concrete steps toward improving infrastructure and public health. The **Proposed Ordinance No. 2026-194** authorizes Mayor Rolando A. Uy to formalize an easement agreement with MORESCO-1, paving the way for the installation of additional electric transmission and distribution lines in Barangay San Simon. This not only supports the city’s growing energy demand but also ensures that development reaches even its farther barangays. Equally important, **Proposed Ordinance No. 2025-120** mandates the installation of handwashing facilities and behavioral nudges in priority settings—an initiative blending public health and behavioral science for long-term benefits.

From Paper to Progress

While council resolutions may seem ceremonial to some, they represent the structural backbone upon which communities thrive. Through these approvals, Cagayan de Oro continues to invest in essential services, empower its citizens, and prepare for a more connected and resilient future. Whether in ensuring that young leaders have the tools to succeed, or in guaranteeing that every household in Barangay San Simon can count on reliable electricity, these legislative actions paint a hopeful picture of progress in motion.

Plus, the facility comes with a price tag of P700 million, which shows just how committed Filinvest is to investing in our planet’s future.

A Clean Energy Revolution

But wait, there’s more! The launch of this solar farm is part of Filinvest’s ambitious plan to boost its solar capacity to 94 MW across the country this year. That’s right; they’re not stopping at just one solar farm! This initiative reflects a growing trend in the Philippines to embrace renewable energy sources and reduce our carbon footprint. With climate change knocking at our door, it’s about time we start investing in clean energy, right?

And let’s not forget the economic benefits! The construction and operation of the Misamis solar farm create jobs and stimulate local economies. It’s a win-win situation, folks!
