In the heart of Northern Mindanao, a region known for its verdant landscapes and vibrant cultures, a different kind of battle is being waged—one that pits the forces of law and order against the shadows of illegal drug trade. The regional headquarters of the Police Regional Office in Northern Mindanao (PRO-10) has emerged as a bastion of hope in this ongoing struggle, marking a significant milestone in their relentless pursuit of a drug-free society. The first quarter of the year has seen an unprecedented haul of PHP18.8 million worth of illegal drugs, a testament to the unwavering commitment of these guardians of peace.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY stands as a witness to the tireless efforts of PRO-10 in dismantling the networks that fuel the illegal drug trade. Brig. Gen. Ricardo Layug Jr., at the helm of these operations, underscored the importance of concerted action and full commitment in achieving the vision of a Bagong Pilipinas (New Philippines). The statistics are a clear indicator of the scale and success of these operations: over 692 anti-illegal drug campaigns have been conducted, leading to the arrest of 813 suspects—a significant blow to the underbelly of drug trafficking networks.

The tangible outcomes of these operations are noteworthy. A staggering 2,765.74 grams of shabu and 29.01 grams of marijuana have been confiscated, cutting off a significant supply line to the drug market. But the impact of these operations extends beyond the immediate seizure of illegal substances. Another 19 villages have been declared drug-free, joining the ranks of 1,501 communities across the region that have been liberated from the clutches of this social menace. This achievement not only reflects the effectiveness of the anti-illegal drug campaigns but also highlights the broader implications for community health and safety.

The resolve of PRO-10 extends beyond the confines of anti-illegal drug operations. Brig. Gen. Layug has also shed light on the comprehensive nature of their law enforcement efforts. With 202 operations targeting illegal gambling, the police force has succeeded in arresting 401 individuals and confiscating PHP108,060 worth of illegal gambling paraphernalia. The campaign against loose firearms has further demonstrated the multidimensional approach of PRO-10, with 475 operations resulting in the arrest of 115 individuals and the recovery of 221 small arms and 23 light weapons. These efforts collectively underscore the holistic strategy employed by PRO-10 in maintaining peace and order in the region.

The numbers, while impressive, only tell part of the story. Behind each operation, each arrest, and each seizure, are the men and women of PRO-10, whose dedication and sacrifice form the backbone of this campaign. Their pursuit is fueled by a deep-seated commitment to the welfare and safety of their communities, driven by the vision of a drug-free Philippines. This relentless drive is mirrored in the words of Brig. Gen. Layug, who emphasizes the collective effort required to surmount the challenges posed by illegal drugs and related crimes.

The accomplishments of PRO-10 in the first quarter set a formidable precedent for the ongoing battle against illegal drugs. However, the fight is far from over. The road ahead demands sustained effort, innovation in tactics, and deeper community engagement to consolidate the gains made thus far. The vision of a Bagong Pilinas, free from the scourge of illegal drugs, is within reach, but it requires the continued vigilance and resolve of all stakeholders.

The journey of PRO-10 in the first quarter of the year is a beacon of hope, illustrating what can be achieved through dedication and collaboration. As the campaign against illegal drugs advances, the lessons learned and the victories secured serve as a foundation for future endeavors. The fight against the illegal drug trade in Northern Mindanao is a testament to the resilience and commitment of those who stand on the front lines, a reminder of the power of collective action in the pursuit of a greater good.

It is through acknowledging and preserving their stories that we can impart the values of sacrifice, unity, and patriotism to the younger generations.

In schools, homes, and public squares, the tales of heroism and perseverance should be told and retold. By doing so, we imbue our daily lives with a sense of purpose and a deeper appreciation for the freedoms often taken for granted. This act of remembrance strengthens our national identity and fortifies our resolve to stand against any force that seeks to undermine our sovereignty and way of life.

The commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan, spearheaded by figures such as Atty. Edgar Cabanlas, is a call to action for every citizen. It encourages us to play an active role in preserving the memories of those who fought for our independence.
