The art world and religious communities alike were greeted with a profound display of faith, culture, and artistic mastery on March 25, 2024, as the City Government of Cagayan de Oro, together with the Department of Trade and Industry (Misamis Oriental) and the Kagay-an Misamis Creative Council (KaMi Creative), inaugurated a photo exhibit that would capture the hearts of many. Named "Saulog: The Marian Collection," this exhibit took center stage at the St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall, marking a significant event in the art realm of the Philippines.

The exhibit paid homage to the late Pennessencio "Nonoy" Estarte, an artist whose works have reverberated through the corridors of Philippine art history. Positioned as a culmination of Women's Month, the Marian collection showcased a series of 15 mixed-media portraits by Estarte. These artworks distinctively blended features of Mother Mary with the attire and features of the indigenous women of Mindanao, presenting a tapestry of cultural reverence and artistic ingenuity.

This artistic endeavor was brought to life through a collaborative partnership involving the Birhen sa Kota Development Foundation, Inc., Peacebuilding GWAPA (Group of Women Advocates for Peace in the Archipelago), and the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro. Each entity brought its unique influence and support, ensuring that the exhibit was not just an art show but a narrative of interconnected faith, culture, and advocacy.

The unveiling of "Saulog: The Marian Collection" was emblematic for several reasons. It not only celebrated the 80th birth anniversary of Archbishop Emeritus Antonio Ledesma, S.J. but also symbolized the dynamism of cultural heritage and the enduring spirit of the archdiocese's care under Estarte’s artistic narrative.

In an act of homage to Mother Mary and all women striving for peace and salvation, the archdiocese's participation underscored a deep respect for Nonoy Estarte’s artistic legacy and his contributions to the religious and cultural tapestry of Cagayan de Oro.

Atty. Roy Hilario Raagas, representing the city's leadership, eloquently voiced the Kagay-anons' devotion and admiration for the Virgin of Cotta through Estarte's artworks. The collection, lent to the archdiocese for public viewing, evidently bridged the gap between divine devotion and artistic expression, illustrating the community's collective reverence.

With the stewardship of John W. Asuncion head of the Oro-TIPC, the exhibit extends an invitation to the public, offering an immersive experience into the religious and cultural dimensions of Estarte's art. Scheduled to remain open until April 30, 2024, "Saulog: The Marian Collection" is a testament to the city's rich heritage and spirited community involvement.

The Marian collection serves as a beacon of inspiration, not just for the religious or art aficionados but for the community at large. It encapsulates the life's work of Nonoy Estarte while fostering a sense of unity, peace, and cultural pride among the Kagay-anons and beyond.

"Saulog: The Marian Collection" stands as a remarkable example of how art can be used as a medium for advocacy and cultural expression. Through the visionary eyes of Nonoy Estarte and the collaborative efforts of various organizations, the exhibit articulates themes of peace, empowerment, and spiritual reverence.

As the exhibit remains open for public viewing, it beckons art lovers, cultural enthusiasts, and the general public to immerse themselves in the profound narratives encapsulated in each portrait. "Saulog: The Marian Collection" is not just an art exhibit; it's a journey through the lens of faith, culture, and unwavering devotion.

In the grand tapestry of art and culture, "Saulog: The Marian Collection" embroiders its unique signature, inviting one and all to partake in its celebration of faith, heritage, and artistic brilliance.

In the heart of Mindanao, the Sultan Kudarat province is poised to make history. The Sultan Kudarat State University (SKSU) College of Medicine will soon open its doors, forever transforming the face of medical education and healthcare in the province and beyond. As Governor Datu Pax Ali Mangudadatu recently announced, the expected year-end inauguration of the medical school will usher in a new era of opportunities for the local community and the healthcare system at large.

The call for a unique College of Medicine in the Sultan Kudarat province has been answered. The announcement by Governor Mangudadatu about the impending opening of the SKSU College of Medicine has created a wave of anticipation and excitement. This development promises to broaden the scope of educational opportunities and bolster the healthcare system, not just within the Sultan Kudarat province, but nationwide.

The journey towards the establishment of the SKSU College of Medicine has been a carefully crafted one. With House Bill (HB) 6771, or An Act Establishing a College of Medicine in Sultan Kudarat State University in Tacurong City, having already passed its second reading at the 19th Congress, the dream of having a medical school in the province is closer than ever to becoming a reality.

Governor Mangudadatu reiterated the provincial government's dedication to empowering the youth and providing them with the necessary support to become active contributors to nation-building. The establishment of the College of Medicine will undoubtedly serve as a significant stepping stone towards this goal.

The initiative has also garnered support from the Senate, with Senator Imee Marcos emphasizing the importance of addressing the shortage of medical field workers during her recent visit to the Sultan Kudarat province. The Senator highlighted that investing in the youth through the SKSU is an investment in the future.

The House Committee on Ways and Means recently approved tax provisions for HB 6771. Representative JC Abalos, the principal sponsor of the bill, underscored the alignment of the initiative with the legislators' commitment to enhancing access to health services, particularly in rural and remote areas.

The proposed legislation also includes provisions that would facilitate the importation of medical books, equipment, and instruments for educational purposes. This move will be instrumental in ensuring that the SKSU College of Medicine is equipped with the necessary resources for effective teaching and learning.

The bill also encourages donations for educational purposes. All grants, bequests, endowments, donations, and contributions used directly and exclusively for educational purposes by the college will be exempt from the donor's tax, stimulating more contributions towards the establishment and operation of the medical school.

Following the approval of the tax provisions, Representative Bai Rihan Sakaluran expressed confidence that they are one step closer to realizing the dream of having a learning institution tasked with honing future medical professionals in Sultan Kudarat.

The establishment of the SKSU College of Medicine signifies more than just an investment in education. It is a testament to the priority given to the health and well-being of the people of Sultan Kudarat and the Soccsksargen region.

In preparation for the opening of the new College of Medicine, Governor Mangudadatu, Sakaluran, Abalos, and SKSU officials recently visited the University of the Philippines-Manila (UPM) in a benchmarking activity. The visit aimed to identify best practices, explore innovative teaching methods, and discuss future collaborations and partnerships.

Once approved, the SKSU College of Medicine will be the first in the province and the third in the Soccsksargen region. This landmark development heralds a new dawn in healthcare for the people of Sultan Kudarat, promising to shape a future where quality healthcare and education are accessible to all.

Ozamiz City, a bustling hub in the province of Misamis Occidental, marked a significant milestone this week as it unveiled the SM Lao Memorial City General Hospital. Spearheaded by none other than the city's dynamic Mayor, Henry "Indy" Oaminal Jr, the soft opening of the hospital was hailed as a "significant breakthrough" in the city's healthcare sector.

The inaugural ceremony was not just a ribbon-cutting event; it symbolized the city's unwavering commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality. It was a testament to the transformative vision of the Padayon Asenso Ozamiz Administration, which continues to shape the city's health landscape.

The soft opening of the hospital is a landmark moment, marking the beginning of the hospital's transitional period. This period is a crucial time for the hospital team, allowing them to acclimate to the new facilities, personnel, and operational procedures.

Mayor Oaminal emphasized the importance of this phase, stating that it provides the team with an opportunity to identify areas for improvement and adjust to new procedures. He added, "It's a time for learning and growth, for refining our operations, and for ensuring we provide the best care possible."

Equipped with an initial capacity of 17 beds, the SM Lao Hospital is poised to address the gaps in the community's healthcare needs. While it currently operates at an infirmary level, plans are already in motion to expand the hospital into a level 1 facility in the future.

The Mayor expressed optimism about the hospital's potential to accommodate up to 50 patients. This expansion would alleviate the pressure on other healthcare institutions and ensure that more residents receive the care they need.

In her speech, Mayor Oaminal underscored the importance of collaboration between neighboring regions to enhance healthcare delivery. "By working together, we can ensure that our healthcare system is robust, equitable, and capable of serving all our citizens," she said.
Dr. Holly Tago, Governor Henry Oaminal's representative, echoed these sentiments. She underscored the provincial government's support for the initiative, recognizing its role in strengthening the overall healthcare infrastructure.

One of the key objectives of the SM Lao Hospital is to decentralize healthcare services. By doing so, the hospital aims to promote equitable access and relieve pressure on centralized facilities.

This approach aligns with Mayor Oaminal's vision of a healthcare system that serves all citizens, regardless of their location. "Decentralizing healthcare services," she said, "is not just about relieving pressure on our main facilities. It's about bringing healthcare closer to our citizens, making it more accessible and convenient for them."

Mayor Oaminal also highlighted the financial benefits of operating a local hospital. By keeping healthcare services within the city, the hospital will stimulate the local economy and increase revenue circulation.

The soft opening of the SM Lao Memorial City General Hospital is more than just a new building. It's a strategic investment in the health and well-being of Ozamiz residents. It underscores the commitment of the Padayon Asenso Ozamiz Administration to prioritize healthcare as a fundamental aspect of community development.

As the hospital prepares to fully integrate into the healthcare ecosystem, Ozamiz residents can anticipate enhanced medical services and improved healthcare outcomes. With a dedicated team of healthcare professionals and state-of-the-art facilities, the hospital is poised to set new standards in the city's healthcare sector.

According to the local government, the opening of the SM Lao Memorial City General Hospital marks the dawn of a new era for Ozamiz City and its constituents. It's a sign of progress and prosperity, a testament to the city's resilience and commitment to the well-being of its citizens.

The SM Lao Memorial City General Hospital is more than just a hospital. It's a beacon of hope, a symbol of the city's commitment to its citizens' health and well-being. As it grows and evolves, it will undoubtedly play a key role in shaping the future of healthcare in Ozamiz City.
