Breaths of Hope: When 16 Nebulizers Became Lifelines

A Quiet Crisis Turns into Shared Tears

Respiratory illnesses quietly choke Misamis Oriental hospitals. Bronchitis. Pneumonia. Children gasp. Elders weaken. Families watch helplessly. On March 5, 2025, sixteen nebulizers arrived. Eight pharmacies. Instant relief. Donated by Cagayan de Oro Filipino-Chinese Amity Club Inc. and Misor Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce. Not machines—literal breaths for the breathless.
Benjamin Chan Jr. spoke softly. “We see the exhaustion in our doctors’ eyes. We feel the fear in mothers’ hearts. Healthcare is not charity. It is love wearing a white coat.” His voice cracked remembering sleepless nights families endure. The province still ranks respiratory diseases among its deadliest threats. Every mist now carries hope instead of despair.
One Governor’s Visit Changed Everything

Governor Juliette Uy walked Alubijid hospital corridors last December. She saw empty shelves. Heard labored breathing. Felt the weight of shortage. She promised action. Dr. Aristotle Betita still remembers her face—determined, pained, human. Weeks later the machines arrived. “Patients no longer wait to breathe,” he said. “We treat faster. We comfort sooner. We lose fewer.”
Chan stood beside the turnover ceremony, eyes shining. “Chinese blood. Filipino heart. One nation. One pain. One fight.” These sixteen units are small. Yet each hiss of mist tells a child “You will play again,” an elder “You will see another sunrise,” a parent “Your baby is safe tonight.” In eight hospitals across Misamis Oriental, gratitude now breathes easier.
