In the realm of junior golf, the recent ICTSI Junior PGT Championship held at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club in Cagayan de Oro City showcased the remarkable talent of young golfers. Notably, Bukidnon’s Claren Quiño emerged as a shining star in the girls' 7-10 division, capturing the title despite facing challenges in the final round. Her determination and skill on the course not only secured her victory but also inspired her peers and aspiring golfers alike.

A Stellar Performance Amidst Challenges

Claren Quiño, a nine-year-old prodigy from Del Monte School, carded an 84 in the final round. Despite encountering six bogeys and three double bogeys, she completed her round with a total score of 165, thus clinching the championship title. Her performance under pressure was commendable, especially as she navigated the nerves of leading the tournament. “I was happy but nervous when I took the lead,” Quiño admitted, reflecting on her experience. The support of her friends, who cheered her on, added a layer of excitement to her game, as she humorously recounted a cheeky moment on the ninth hole.

Moreover, Quiño’s victory was not without competition. She managed to fend off the challenge posed by local standout Abby Qiu, who finished with a score of 168 after carding an 83 in her final round. Francesca Geroy, the first-day leader, ended up in third place with a total score of 172 after carding a 92. This competitive spirit among the young athletes highlights the promising future of golf in the region.

The nine-year-old golfer showcased his abilities with rounds of 71 and 78, culminating in a total score of 149. Despite his success, Barnes humbly acknowledged areas for improvement, stating, “I played okay but my putting wasn’t so good again.” This self-awareness exemplifies the maturity of these young athletes and their commitment to continuous improvement.

In the race for the boys' championship, Davao's Miguel Revilleza finished in second place with a total score of 158, having also carded a 78 in his final round. Local contender Shaqeeq Tanog rounded out the top three, finishing with an 84 for a total of 163.
