Thorough Inspection Highlights Critical Safety Issues
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Cagayan de Oro City 1st District Engineering Office (CDOC 1ST DEO) recently undertook a crucial ocular inspection at the Pryce Plaza Hotel Perimeter Fence located in Carmen Hill, Barangay Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City. This step was prompted by a concerned citizen’s report regarding alleged missing slope protection materials in a completed infrastructure project. The DPWH investigates alleged missing slope protection materials in finished project sites to ensure public safety and structural integrity.
During this meticulous investigation, the Planning and Design and Maintenance Sections uncovered a significant defect: 17 individual plates and 30 pairs of plates and pins had reportedly gone missing. These components are essential anchors within the Wire Mesh System Slope Protection, which acts to secure the high-tensile wire mesh firmly to the slope. This anchoring system plays a critical role in preventing ground movement and subsequent erosion. The absence of these materials compromises the entire protection system, thus posing potential hazards.
Proactive Measures and Community Vigilance
In light of these findings, the DPWH’s CDOC 1ST DEO swiftly initiated a reassessment strategy aimed at replacing the missing ground anchors. This decisive action underlines the department’s commitment to restoring the integrity of the wire mesh system, thereby safeguarding the slope and surrounding areas from instability and degradation. Moreover, such proactive measures demonstrate the importance placed on meticulous post-project evaluations.
Furthermore, the DPWH encourages the public to remain vigilant and observant of ongoing and completed infrastructure projects within their communities. Reports of missing construction materials may signify theft or negligence post-implementation. Hence, community involvement remains an indispensable component in protecting and preserving public resources. By fostering collective responsibility, DPWH can effectively enhance transparency and ensure the longevity of infrastructure developments.
The DPWH investigates alleged missing slope protection materials in finished projects not only to address immediate safety concerns but also to strengthen community trust and safeguard public investments. Continuous collaboration between government agencies and citizens will be paramount in maintaining the resilience of critical infrastructure.
