In Cagayan De Oro City, a significant medical milestone has been reached. The Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC), a branch of the Department of Health Center for Health Development Northern Mindanao (DOH-CHDNM), has evolved into a state-of-the-art facility for the diagnosis and surgical treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
Dr. Bernard Julius Rocha, the spearhead of the Cardiovascular Care Center at NMMC, shared during the Talakayan sa PIA Konsultayo Series that the evolution of the NMMC into a heart center was not an overnight event. The program for cardiovascular care took its roots back in 2013.
Doctors from the NMMC received training at the renowned Philippine Heart Center. Upon their return, the Cardiovascular Care Program was launched, paving the way for more advanced care for heart patients in the region.
NMMC is now formally inaugurating its Cardiovascular Care Center after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed into law Republic Act No. 11959, also known as the Regional Specialty Centers Act.
With a daily waitlist for cardiovascular operations exceeding 100, the center is serving not only coronary artery bypass patients but also those with valve and congenital diseases.
Cardiovascular disease ranks among the top 10 diseases worldwide and consistently remains the number one cause of death across countries.
Lifestyle, according to Dr. Rocha, plays a significant role in developing cardiovascular diseases. Hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, and stress are among the five leading risk factors.
The Department of Health is initiating multiple specialty centers to decrease the prevalence of these diseases, focusing on prevention rather than just treatment.
Patients can avail themselves of various government benefits, such as the PhilHealth Z-Benefit package, the DOH Medical Assistance to Indigent Patients (MAIP) Program, and the Malasakit Center.
With the inauguration of the Cardiovascular Care Center, NMMC embarks on a journey to provide more comprehensive and advanced care for heart patients in the region.
