Cacao Symphony: Belgian Diplomats Step Into Mindanao's Pulsing Chocolate Heart

COURTESY: The Mindanao Development Authority

Sun-drenched leaves rustled as the scent of fermenting cacao wrapped around the visitors like warm velvet. **The Mindanao Development Authority, through its Area Management Office-Northern Mindanao, visited Cacao farms and the Cacao Fermentation Facility of Kennemer in Calinan, Davao City together with the Belgian Ambassador Vladislava Lordanova and Consul Leonilo Claudio, Belgium's Honorary Consul for Mindanao.** The air buzzed with possibility.
Beneath the Emerald Canopy

Delegates wove between slender cacao trees heavy with glistening pods, crimson and gold. Farmers, hands stained earth and pride, sliced open ripe fruit to reveal snowy pulp cradling precious beans. Every gentle explanation crackled with energy—stories of dawn harvests, careful pruning, and rain-fed resilience. Ambassador Lordanova leaned close, eyes bright, absorbing the living rhythm of the grove.
Laughter rose when a farmer handed her a fresh pod; she cracked it open, tasting the bright, tangy surprise inside. Connections sparked instantly amid the green cathedral.

Fermentation Alchemy Unleashed

Inside Kennemer’s humming facility, towering heaps of beans exhaled rich, earthy perfume. Workers turned the mounds with practiced grace, coaxing out notes of fruit, spice, and deep chocolate magic. Precise thermometers glowed; timers ticked like heartbeats. The Belgian delegation circled the wooden boxes, voices rising in animated questions about microbial magic and flavor finesse.
Consul Claudio traced the journey from tree to bar, visibly moved by the craftsmanship. Ambassador Lordanova nodded firmly—Belgium’s chocolate heritage meeting Mindanao’s raw talent felt electric, inevitable. Promises of future collaboration hung sweet and heavy in the warm air.

Mindanao’s cacao pulse beats stronger today, drawing the world closer with every fragrant breath.

Groundbreaking Harvest: Lanao del Norte Blooms with New Drying Systems for Rice Farmers

Empowering Farmers Through Modern Mechanization

PhilMech proudly broke ground on March 3 in LALA, Lanao del Norte, launching the Drying System I Project under the RCEF Mechanization Program. This initiative strengthens post-harvest facilities and delivers vital equipment to rice-based cooperatives. Partnerships flourish across Barangays Lanipao, Rebe, San Isidro, San Manuel, and Magpatao in Lala, alongside Poblacion and Curvada in Kapatagan. Engineer Edgar B. Testa, Mindanao Cluster Head, highlights how the program boosts on-farm and off-farm efficiency—from land preparation to drying and storage. Farmers gain tools that slash production costs by 2-3 pesos per kilo and curb post-harvest losses by 3-5 percent.
The RCEF extension via Republic Act 12078 injects P30 billion annually until 2031, fueling modernization. Testa emphasizes the core goal: elevate farmers' income through heightened productivity. This vision aligns seamlessly with Bagong Pilipinas, channeling genuine government assistance to rural communities.

Voices of Progress and Partnership

MSU-IIT NMPC Chairperson Edward Banwa celebrates the collaboration, noting direct benefits for 205 farmer-members in Barangay Rebe. He describes the drying system shed as far more than a structure—it embodies unwavering government support, empowering farmers and fortifying national food security. Lala Mayor Angel Tata Yap welcomes the synergy between local government, PhilMech, and cooperatives, ensuring sustained aid.

Provincial Agriculturist Engineer Jalandoni Pitiilan ties the project to Governor Mohamad Khalid Q. Dimaporo’s ambition: transform Lanao del Norte into Mindanao’s premier agricultural hub. These groundbreaking efforts weave efficiency, reduced losses, and rising incomes into the fabric of local farming. LALA advances boldly toward a thriving, progressive agricultural future.
