When opportunity knocks, you lace up your gloves and answer the call. That’s exactly what the Cagayan de Oro City Amateur Boxing Team did when they packed their gear and headed to the International School Sport Federation (ISF) tournament in Bahrain. And boy, did they deliver a knockout performance! The team returned home with a commendable haul: 1 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals. This isn’t just a story of victory; it’s a tale of grit, teamwork, and the spirit of sportsmanship.

Let’s step into the ring and look at how this journey began. Eight boxers from the Cagayan de Oro City, all aged between 15 and 18, embarked on their first international boxing competition. It was a moment of pride and anticipation, not just for the athletes, but also for their coach, Elmer Pamisa. With the support of City Mayor Klarex Uy and the City Sports Development Office led by Allby Cris Waga, the team was well-prepared to take on the best in the world.

The ISF tournament in Bahrain was no walk in the park. Competing against seasoned fighters from countries like Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Brazil, the CDO team was undoubtedly facing a David vs. Goliath scenario. But with great challenges come great opportunities. The young pugilists embraced the chance to learn, grow, and showcase their talent on an international stage.

At the heart of this triumphant tale is Christian Jake Pores, who clinched the lone gold medal in the 48 kgs category. His victory was the crowning glory of the team’s performance, highlighting his exceptional skill and determination. Meanwhile, silver medals were bagged by Shairylle Pores (women’s 46 kgs), Ever Joy Nuez (women’s 48 kgs), John Michael Estorba (52 kgs), and Joel Rosas Jr. (54 kgs). These fighters exhibited not only physical prowess but also strategic acumen in the ring.

And let’s not forget the bronze medalists: Ivan Llaban (46 kgs), Sherwin Villanueva (51 kgs), and Argie Reyes (57 kgs). Their performances were nothing short of inspiring, proving that sheer will and perseverance can take you far. Each punch they threw was a testament to their hard work and dedication.

Behind every successful athlete is a coach who believes in them, and for the CDO boxing team, that coach is Elmer Pamisa. Along with coach Fernie Lou Abing, they spent countless hours training and mentoring these young athletes. Their guidance was instrumental in shaping the boxers’ skills and mental toughness. But it wasn't just about the technicalities. The coaches instilled in their team the values of sportsmanship, discipline, and resilience, which are essential both inside and outside the ring.

Moreover, the unwavering support from City Mayor Klarex Uy and the City Sports Development Office played a crucial role in this success story. Their commitment to nurturing young talent has set a precedent for future generations of athletes. This victory is as much theirs as it is the athletes’.

So, what does this victory mean for the CDO boxing team and the community? It’s more than just medals and accolades. It’s about putting Cagayan de Oro City on the map in the world of sports. It’s about inspiring young athletes to dream big and work hard. This triumph is a beacon of hope and a reminder that with the right mix of talent, support, and determination, anything is possible.

The CDO boxing team’s success in Bahrain is a story that will be told for years to come. It’s a testament to the power of dreams and the relentless pursuit of excellence. As they return home with their heads held high, they carry with them not just the weight of their medals, but the pride of an entire city. Here's to more punches, more victories, and more stories of triumph from these young warriors!
