Rising Above the Ring: Melvin Jerusalem's Triumphant Return to Manolo Fortich

World Boxing Council (WBC) Minimumweight World Champion Melvin "El Gringo" Jerusalem, a local hero, made a triumphant return to his hometown of Manolo Fortich on April 5, 2024. The day was marked with joy and pride as the town's proud son, a resident of Sitio Gaboc, Barangay Lingion, was welcomed by his people with open arms and beaming smiles.


The morning sun was just beginning to peak over the horizon when Jerusalem, escorted by Municipal Sports Coordinator Jay Alquisar and Zip Sanman Boxing Promotions Assistant Manager Victor "Vic" Tamayo, arrived at the New Government Center (NGC). Despite the early hour, the excitement in the air was palpable, a testament to the respect and admiration the people of Manolo Fortich hold for their homegrown champion.


Vice Mayor Reynaldo L. Bagayas Jr, alongside Municipal Administrator Engr. Joyous Caesar M. Gaid, warmly received Jerusalem. Mayor Rogelio N. Quiño, though absent due to official duties, sent his heartfelt congratulations and reiterated his pride in Jerusalem's achievement.


As the champion spoke, his joy at returning home was evident. He expressed his gratitude to his town, his loved ones, and the Almighty for his victory over the undefeated Yudai Shigeoka in Nagoya, Japan, on March 31, 2024. "Lord have mercy, I earned the WBC Minimumweight World Championship belt. Amidst the hardship I've been through since training. 


The pride of Manolo Fortich was not only in Jerusalem's victory but also in the recognition that he is a product of the town's dedication to sports development. Vice Mayor Bagayas emphasized the significance of Jerusalem's victory, stating that it was a testament to the effectiveness of Mayor Quiño's municipal olympics program.


In honor of Jerusalem's victory, the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) led by Councilor Rina E. Who passed a resolution commending his efforts. The resolution serves as an acknowledgment of Jerusalem's achievement and the honor he has brought to Manolo Fortich.


Jerusalem expressed his gratitude for the warm reception and the commendation, reiterating his love for his hometown and his desire to continue bringing honor to Manolo Fortich.



With his victory, Jerusalem has not only brought honor to his hometown but also set a new standard for the youth of Manolo Fortich. His story serves as a reminder that with hard work and dedication, anyone can achieve greatness.
