Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco recently pledged a new gift to the bustling city of Zamboanga—a tourist rest area. This heartening development is an addition to the city’s efforts to enhance the overall tourism experience for visitors heading to the enchanting archipelago of Onse Islas. As a part of the Marcos administration's vision to bolster the tourism sector, this rest area shall serve as a comforting respite before tourists embark on their journey exploring the 11 islands.
Onse Islas, an attractive cluster of 11 islands, is a treasure trove that the city of Zamboanga is keen to develop. These islands, with their pristine waters, majestic rock formations, and rich coastal resources, including mangroves, seagrass beds, corals, and reef fish, are a testament to the city's natural wealth. The tourist rest area's establishment will further encourage and facilitate the exploration of this captivating marine biodiversity.
The proposed Tourist Rest Area, a flagship project of the Department of Tourism (DOT), is set to become a convergence point for both foreign and local travellers. It will provide information on tourism sites, attractions, activities, and accommodations. Furthermore, it will act as a service point for addressing safety and security concerns, along with offering necessary provisions, like clean restrooms, enhancing the overall travel experience.
Secretary Frasco made the rest area announcement during the launch of the department's Philippine Experience Program (PEP): Culture, Heritage, and Art Caravan in Western Mindanao. This program, supported by Zamboanga City Mayor John Dalipe, is a reflection of the city's commitment to align its local tourism plans with the national tourism development plan.
With the launch of the Philippine Experience Program, Zamboanga City, under Mayor Dalipe's administration, is ready to welcome an influx of tourists. The city's preparedness is evident from the 14 percent increase in tourist arrivals in 2023, totalling 686,744 visitors.
Zamboanga City offers a plethora of local tourism products that ensure a unique travel and tour experience. With options ranging from eco tours, gastronomy tours, dive tours, cultural and historical tours, industrial tours, to vibrant festivals, there's something for every type of traveller.
One of the most significant events under the Dalipe administration is the institutionalized Hermosa Golf Tournament. Celebrated every October, it forms a part of the biggest festival in the city, the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival, a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage.
Secretary Frasco reaffirmed the Department of Tourism's commitment to showcasing Zamboanga's vibrant story. The department's partnership with the city is aimed at highlighting the Filipino identity under the Marcos administration.
With the promise of a new tourist rest area and the launch of new tourism programs, the future of Zamboanga City's tourism looks bright. As the city continues to develop and highlight its unique attractions, it is all set to become a must-visit destination in the Filipino travel itinerary.
The city of Zamboanga extends its gratitude to Secretary Frasco and the Department of Tourism for their unwavering support in enhancing the city's tourism sector. With their help, Zamboanga City is sure to leave a lasting impression on all visitors, promising an unmatched Filipino tourism experience.
